Medicine degree as an AHP

Hello,
Has anyone successfully completed the medicine degree as a mature student already working in the allied health profession?
I am interested in this but u sure about the barriers.
I have a degree already RNLD (2.2 but two marks off 2.1)
How difficult is the gamsat test/ interview.
There is only one uni I want to attend however it’s a red brick.
I’d be interested in the 4 year course rather than the 5 year entry.
Any guidance please 🙏

From memory there are GAMSAT practice papers and other resources to be found online. Depending on your background level of academic ability you might find this easier or harder than what you have done before. For most candidates it takes a fair bit of practice, particularly if they haven't been in school for a while.

In the main I would say your prior experience will be very useful because you will already have a working bedside manner and also because you will likely understand the practical utility of a lot of the content involved from very early on- it's a vocational course after all. I know one particular individual who could score 60+% all day long in finals level exams without much effort because like you they had a relatively high level of background knowledge to begin with. They really appreciated their medical degree though because it filled in a lot of blanks their prior training had left and which isn't really covered in other programmes.

I have friends who are nurses or paramedics and they don't seem to have a huge focus on anatomy or physiology based on what they have explained to me. Much of medicine (but not absolutely all of it in truth) relies on these a fair bit hence the time dedicated to them pre-clinically.

You also still have the full option of opting for an undergraduate level course. Depending on your location and other considerations this might be a beneficial option for you.

Hope this helps.

The only medical school that would consider you with your current qualifications is Nottingham, assuming you do well enough on the GAMSAT. You can do some practice tests online to get a feel for the level of difficulty.

There are a few other universities that allow students to compensate for a 2:ii degree classification with a higher mark at Master's level, but that would be a time-consuming and expensive process that I wouldn't recommend unless you're very confident you can achieve the necessary grade.
