Should I apply to Cambridge?

Wondering if I stand the slightest chance of getting into Cambridge for architecture bachelors. For context, I only began considering Cambridge during GCSE summer… It’s not been my lifelong dream and I’d be happy studying elsewhere. However, the uni does really appeal to me and I’d like to know if it’s worth a shot.

I study A-Level Maths, Physics and a modern foreign language (not a native). Should be predicted at least A*AA by the end of y12, preferably A*A*A. Completed an architecture related EPQ and am awaiting grade.

My GCSEs are kinda mid: 88877666555
Art & Design and English Lang are 8s. The 5s are in subjects irrelevant to architecture. My secondary school scored below national average, and although I did not get the very highest grades in my school (210+ students in my year) I certainly am comfortably within top 10%.

I have had free school meals the entirety of secondary, and still do now. My postcode is IMD eligible. First generation in my family to go to uni. I am eligible for a contextual offer at every uni which offers architecture (& does contextual offers) in the UK. I do not believe I have any extenuating circumstances, at least none on paper. Have had quite a few staffing issues at both my secondary and current sixth form. Both my secondary school and my sixth form are in deprived areas.

Super curricular wise I’ve completed quite a few, and have got a multitude lined up: summer school(s), work experience, competition entries, reading books. Also have an array of extracurriculars which I won’t list as I doubt Cambridge cares about them.

The reason I am not currently studying an art subject is because my sixth form wouldn’t let me. I studied a BTEC previously and achieved grade 8 equivalent, but as my secondary art teacher got fired and my old school couldn’t organise sending over my portfolio I couldn’t study it. I don’t believe I’m amazing at art, but I could certainly create an up to scratch portfolio and hopefully perform well in the admissions assessment. I volunteer at a local art gallery, and have got into online UNIQ for History of Art. Hopefully this will somewhat makeup for not taking the a level. My EPQ was an artefact too!

I understand there’s no harm in trying, but please lmk if you think there’s any chance of me getting in, or at least getting to the interview stage?

To summarise: mid GCSEs, okay a levels but missing an art subject, a good personal statement (I sure hope so, plenty of super curriculars & I enjoy writing), decent portfolio. Interviews are one of my strengths, not as if I’ve ever done an Oxbridge one, but I believe this won’t be a problem.

Thank you

So, to answer the question?

So, to answer the question?

Have you read the page? Are your school willing to explain in your reference why you aren't doing Art? Will they help with a portfolio?

The stats imply you may be at a disadvantage by not doing Art or Design. Why not go to an Open day and ask? That's the only way to get a reliable answer.

Apply apply apply ! You’ve got 5 choices - make Cambridge one of them. My daughter went to a comp, her sixth form encouraged her to apply and she was offered a place. (She is in her final year at Caius and has loved every minute). You sound like you have every chance of getting an offer. Go for it.

The open day advice from Muttley is spot on. If you can’t get to an open day email the colleges.

I’ve read that page many times previously but thank you for sharing it and for all of your advice! I didn’t think of ensuring my school mentions why I’m not taking art in my reference, so I’ll certainly ask them.

I’ll make sure to ask during their open day this summer. Would you recommend I ask architecture director of studies at colleges, or the department of architecture?

Thank you for your reply, you’ve really boosted my confidence and I’m now certain on applying to Cambridge 💗

Caius is one of the colleges I’m most excited to visit, so I’m glad to hear your daughter loves it. Is there anything she especially likes about her college? Best wishes to you both

Speak to one of them - they should give the same answer!

WiIl your school's art department help with your portfolio because they may well give you valuable feedback. Your portfolio may well be crucial as you aren't taking art.

Would you recommend emailing specifically the director of studies for architecture at each college?

Will do thank you!

I have spoken to my school’s art department and they are willing to, however there isn’t a permanent member of staff at the moment so I’m not sure if they can really help. I’ll speak to them again after Easter break.

If not, where else can I seek guidance for portfolios? I have applied for a free summer school (UCL Sutton Trust) which focuses on portfolio creation, but that’s not a guarantee and I won’t find out if my application was successful until early May.

Oh good luck with that application.

I expect you've already read this: https://www.arct.cam.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/preparing-a-portfolio

Have you googled 'Cambridge architecture portfolios' as I found a few examples ...

Email the admissions directors at your preferred college(s). Occasionally, admissions requirements change year-on-year and directors of studies can be a little slower to catch on. When they made Mathematics a required subject for Natural Sciences, it took a lot of correcting from the admissions team to get them to catch up.

Also, Art and Design is not a strictly required subject, although 90% of successful applicants offered it. Then again, 90% is not 100%. Source: https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/architecture-ba-hons - see "Almost all had studied at least one of the subjects recommended above. Around 90% took Art & Design, plus either Mathematics, Physics or both."

1) It’s a big central college, there are plenty of people so you’re bound to find your peeps
2) All the first years are together so it’s great for making friends
3) Minimum dining requirement means lots of socialising
4)Relatively rich college so money to support your studies is available if money is tight.
