Laptop battery stuck

My laptop has a light which is alternately flashing green and red, it should be just green. In addition the battery symbol in the corner of the screen is stuck at 0 percent.
Everything appears to be plugged in and it is working and switched on. Any ideas what's going on?

Update...the battery has been charged fully it's now showing 100 percent but the light continues to do what it does in alternating between red and green actually more like orange and green. Any ideas?
