Law application

Hi, Im a year 12student and i didn’t do as well jn my gcses ( 666555554) I want to apply for law but i want to get into a really good university. My predicted a-level grades currently are A*AA and i already have many extracurriculars and super curricular lined up. Do I have a chance? And what prestigious universities are lenient with gcse’s please let me know

Certainly you have good chance.

Do have 1 or 2 safe choices in your UCAS application.

You will need to ace the LNAT test for a top university. Search all the threads on TSR for advice on how to prep for it this summer.

you’ve definitely got a good chance, as long as you do get around those sort of grades and a good personal statement, plenty of good law unis don’t require an lnat, but you will still have a chance even with unis that do want an lnat

GCSEs are only likely to play an influential role at a minority of unis( Oxbridge, London unis), so perhaps I’d avoid wasting an application to one of these( particularly Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, but some Londons may be more lenient( KCL perhaps).

Besides these, while still evaluated holistically, your strong set of predicted grades, a strong personal statement, references and particularly a strong LNAT sec A+B score will leave you in a strong position for almost every other top uni.

Perhaps include at least 1/2 safer options( AAA EGs instead of A*AA for example) and then 1 very strong choice, and 2 optimistic, but fair choices- this could look something like:

Very strong choice: Durham
2 Optimistic, but fair: Bristol, Nottingham
2 Safer(AAA): York, Glasgow

Could also include Warwick, but I’ve heard they’re fairly harsh on GCSEs, so bare that in mind- these are all great institutions, that you’d have a great chance at attaining offers from, despite your GCSEs.

Hey!

Predicted A*AA and strong extracurriculars/supercurriculars? That’s a solid foundation for applying to Law at top universities, even if your GCSEs weren’t what you hoped for.

So here’s the good news: while GCSEs are considered by most competitive universities, they’re not the only thing that matters and many unis take a holistic view of your application. If your A-level predictions are strong (which they are), and you can back that up with a standout personal statement, strong reference, and LNAT (where required), you’re absolutely still in the running.

In terms of prestigious universities that are more lenient with GCSEs, here are a few to keep on your radar:

King’s College London (KCL) usually require high A-levels and LNAT, but are known to be more flexible with GCSE profiles, especially if you’re strong elsewhere.

Queen Mary (QMUL) part of the Russell Group and offers a solid Law programme with a strong reputation in the legal world.

University of Birmingham also prestigious and a great option with contextual admissions and a more flexible approach to GCSEs.

University of Leeds known for its well-rounded admissions process.

University of Kent or Reading not always mentioned in the same breath as Oxbridge, but have strong law schools and great employability links.

Also, check whether any of the unis you’re interested in offer contextual offers if you meet certain criteria (e.g., attend a school with lower average performance, are first in your family to go to uni, or live in a lower participation area), they may make a reduced offer or look at your GCSEs with more flexibility.

Keep aiming high and don’t rule out applying to places like Bristol, Durham, or even LSE if the rest of your application is strong enough. Just make sure your LNAT prep is on point if you’re applying to LNAT universities!
You're definitely not out of the running far from it. Stay focused, build that personal statement around your passion for Law, and keep going! You've got this
