Gcse grades for russell group unis

Hi, I was wondering if there was anyone who applied to Russell group unis with slightly lower GCSES, and no contextual information for it. For me, my GCSE grades are 8,8,8,7,7,7,7,6,6 with two 6's in physics and English.
I wanted to apply to Warwick, KCL, and UCL for PPE and wondered if anyone in my situation could help ease my mind. I just want to know if I would have a good chance, and would like some advice from those that have been in a similar position to me.
Thank you!

Universities will clearly state any specific GCSE grades required on their websites - typically just Maths and/or English, depending on the degree subject you are applying for. These are not flexible - if you apply without the stated grades, you will get an immediate rejection by that Uni.

If you are applying for competitive Universities, or for competitive subjects at any University, they will usually look at your overall GCSE profile as part of their assessment. This usually forms only a small % of your overall application score and Universities are far more interested in your A level grades, and evidence of your academic interest in the degree subject.

Btw, there is nothing special about these specific Universities, whatever your school tries to tell you - its just marketing nonsense.
Unless you're going for Oxford your grades are fine for RG unis*. They're far more interested in your A Level results.

I got into the University of Leeds (and had an offer from Liverpool that I didn't take) initially for a degree (which I later dropped out of) with A*AAAABBBCCC for my GCSEs, plus my A Levels.
They didn't give two hoots about my GCSEs as long as I had passed English and Maths.

*some courses have specific GCSE requirements, such as medicine. However these are clearly stated on the course pages so look at the universities' websites.

And it is not a plural term - there is only one Russell Group

I got 9887777766 (so similar to you) and applied to Cambridge, Warwick, KCL, St Andrews and Durham (with A*A*A and A* EPQ predicted)

I got offers from Warwick, KCL, Durham, then rejected by St Andrews without contextual reasons for my GCSE results. I also got rejected post-interview Cambridge (and in my feedback this was due to my performance at interview not being this best, but they were happy with my GCSEs, A levels etc) but I did get a diagnosis during the application process, which meant they did consider some contextual factors so take that with a grain of salt.

I was in the same boat as you, genuinely believing I wouldn't get offers (particularly because I had a 7 in English lit which is what I wanted to do!) but I found they care a lot more about your A-levels, teacher reference, and an enthusiastic personal statement!

I know English is much less competitive than PPE but I'd honestly go for it if you're confident that you've shown your progress from GCSE  good luck!!

thank you so much, congrats on all your offers! this has helped to ease my mind.
if you wouldn't mind me asking, how come you didn't choose a non-Russell group I've decided not to count st andrews since that's a very competitive non-Russell group.
I was just wondering since I'm unsure if I should do a lower ranking uni as a backup/safety?

Sorry for the late reply and thanks! For me I had checked beforehand with the unis whether I would qualify for a contextual offer (which for KCL I recieved ABB and Durham AAB and for St Andrews it would have been ABB as well due to my post code). It comes down to your own gut feeling, and I felt that for English it was worth the risk to not put a non-Russell group uni when I could probably get a place in clearing if need be because it's not a very popular course. Also, I personally felt the contextual offers matched my worst case scenario grades based off my previous exam experiences anyway. That being said it's definitely much more risky to rely on clearing for PPE than English because of how competitive it tends to be. So at least 1 or 2 non-Russell group options may be more comfortable for you. Plus PPE is very highly regarded anywhere, regardless of university. English is slightly different in that respect
