Funding for international students?

Im American but Ive always wanted to attend uni in the UK. I applied this cycle and received unconditionals in responce to all of my apps, plus some internal scholarships. I got a really good offer to my top uni in particular and planned to attend in the fall except I just found out the family member who was going to support my tuition will suddenly no longer be able to do so.

I got a really good financial offer in the US to a T20, but I feel very lost as I cannot picture myself there at all.

Are there any ways I can fund my degree as an international student that dont include private loans? The federal FAFSA loans wouldnt even cover tuition, much less immigration related fees, housing, etc. I also cant really apply for external scholarships as I need to decide by May 1st, since that's the offer acceptance deadline in the US. Would it make sense to take a gap year to work and make money, then reapply next year, or would unis not like to see a year of "doing nothing"? Or can I/should I defer entry for a year? Or what other things could I look into? Are unis at all open to negotiating financial aid or awarding grants to internationals with financial hardships? Sorry for the string of questions, thanks in advance.

Hi Fexehh,

You don't say which unis you've applied for, but if you've applied to York please get in contact with our USA rep (her details are half way down the page) as she'll be able to help.

All the best, E.

Sorry, I wanted an air of privacy and didnt apply to york. But would it be best practice to find and reach out to the USA reps for each of the schools?
