How to pick a uni course!?

I’m currently in y12 on Easter half term and I’m starting to worry about applying to uni, I take Art, English lit and Psychology (as well as core maths) and I’m really struggling to decide wether to pick a course based in Art Or in English. I’m equally good at both and I love Art and English but I worry that if I pick one I will grow to hate it and forever regret not picking the other. I also have no idea how I’m supposed to pick what uni to go to as my school and parents have high standards and I’ve been spending the past few days doing very little work just watching shows 😭 PLEASE HELP!

Hi there,

I totally understand this feeling! Not knowing which path to choose and having more than one passion can be tough, but feel reassured that many students are in the same position!

Since you enjoy both Art and English, I'd start by exploring where each subject could take you. Prospects is a great resource for doing this, and can then lead you to other places to explore things you haven't considered before. Thinking about where you'd like to end up in the future is essential, even if you're still unsure at the end of it, which many people are! It's also important to remember that there are options at each stage of this process. If you decide you don't want to continue with your initial decision, you can change it! Students transfer all the time, and many decide to pick up their other passion as a hobby or study it later in life.

A pro-con list was super helpful for me at this stage, so consider trying this! It's a great way to get all of your ideas out on paper and visualize which subject you may lean in favour of.

As well as exploring the subjects, UCAS is a great resource for exploring your options for universities. Choosing where you study does matter, so creating a shortlist of universities you are interested in can really help you get closer to a decision. If you're still unsure of what to study, take a look at the range of courses they can offer for Art and English. This may help you find something you didn't think of before, but is actually perfect for you!

It's daunting, but a super exciting process too. I hope this helps and best of luck! 🙂

Hi @App.leX

I was in a very similar position during A-levels, I studied Textiles, English Combined and Government and Politics and I was stuck between Fashion and English.

I did a art and design foundation course at the college I did my a-levels, it is a year long course that is also offered at universities and I couldn't recommend it more. Lots of people choose this option if they are unsure what to study as it gives you a year to explore art further and see whether it would be for you as well as a year to do lots of university research. I went to lots of open days in this time (we where able to take days off to do so at my college), we had people from different universities come in to do talks as well as past students who could give us their university experience and we attended higher education/UCAS fairs.

Like the other response said exploring both courses is a good idea and that is what I did in that year. My lecture helped me find a course that really suited me and you learn a lot about what you like and don't like as we had the chance to try fine art, photography, graphics, ceramics, printmaking, textiles/fashion, life drawing and more. It gives you a taste as what art projects would be like to study at university and if you don't like it you can always go and study English, it was not uncommon for students to do the year and then study something non arts related.

I have also just done a post that you may find useful, I will leave a link Tips on Making a University Choice - The Student Room

I hope this helps, good luck! If you have any questions I would be happy to answer
