Applying to US University by Scholarship

Hello!!!!

I'm currently in year 12 studying 2 level 3s and A level maths at a sixth form, and A level physics on my own. I aspire to have a career in mechatronics and my desired school is in the US. Coming from a low income family I can't afford the tution and all other fees so I plan on trying to get a scholarship. In December 2024, I sat the SAT exam and had 1240. I don't think that score would secure anything for me so I would be trying again in the summer.

To avoid congestion I'm trying to sort out my US schooling before year 13 when we start to fill out the UCAS application. Via College Board I'm trying to complete a CSS profile but neither I nor my parents have any idea what documents they are.

So I would like help with sorting that out and other activities that would give me an edge or sites I can get something out of like applying for scholarships. Thank you.

Have you applied to Sutton Trust yet? This is the only US scholarship programme that I know of.

I did but I didn't get a place. But I just received a letter from Sutton Trust Online today that I was accepted on that one.

Unlike in the UK, your best bet for scholarships to US unis will be funding through the CSS profile ( which CollegeBoard offers live calls and video chats for through their website, if you have questions ) and internal scholarships at the unis youre applying to. So make sure the places you're applying to say they meet "full demonstrated need," which is a fancy way of saying they will calculate how much they think you can afford, and if accepted, will only charge you up to that amount. As you're looking at where to apply, make sure to complete the Net Price Calculator for each uni your considering as those will pretty accurately tell you how much they'll expect you to pay.

Hmmmmmm....
That sounds like something that can be worked on. Thank you so much.
