GCSE timing/time management????

Hi - Sorry if i’ve done this wrong because it’s my first time posting.

I got my mocks back and I got 999888555. I really want to improve to all 8s and 9s, is that possible?

All of my 5s were in essay subjects, (english lang, geography, drama) I can’t seem to manage time and I score really high on the questions that I complete (like for english i scored 38/40 for question 5 but I got carried away and I didn’t leave time for any of the rest of the paper), but I leave so much unanswered that my marks are terrible. I just can’t think fast enough to get things down onto the page if that makes sense??? how do i start thinking faster???? I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, if i haven’t phrased something in exactly the way that i envisioned i feel compelled to nitpick it until i think it’s good enough.

i know that a 5 is a good grade but my mum is arab and if i don’t get straight 8s and 9s i’m going to live in the lebanese mountains with my cousins.

my school does gcse help clubs but they’re invite only, and my english teacher told me that she has to hide in the shower from her children in order to get her marking done (so i’ve been really deterred from asking her to mark anything) i don’t even know what to ask my teachers for help with, because i’m absolutely fine with the content, i just can’t put it down on the page fast enough. any time i ask for help with keeping in time i get some variation of ‘i dont really know, go ask someone else’ i already have extra time and a computer because my school thinks i might be adhd. (literally cannot get more speccy lolll). my parents are not allowed to know about this because they would kill me.

how do i get quicker? has anyone had a similar problem? sorry if i haven’t explained it properly. any advice would be so so so appreciated. thanks

Hey—first off, you explained everything perfectly and honestly, you're not alone at all in what you’re feeling. Huge respect for how self-aware and reflective you are—seriously. Your post had me nodding the whole way through because it makes complete sense, and a lot of students are in the same boat but don’t know how to put it into words like you just did. So no need to apologise—you’re doing everything right by reaching out. The good news is, yes, you can absolutely improve to all 8s and 9s.

Your mock results show the ability is 100% there—like scoring 38/40 in English Q5 is amazing, and it proves that your writing quality is already top-tier. What’s holding you back is timing, not talent.

You don’t need to “think faster,” you just need to train your brain to write faster without over-editing. Start doing timed drills—like one 10-minute or 15-minute question per day where you’re not allowed to backspace, rephrase, or overthink. Just get words down. You can also practise writing “messy first drafts” so your brain gets used to completing answers without needing them to be perfect. Then, if you have time left, that’s when you can clean things up.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask your teachers for really small, specific things—like “could I send you one paragraph to check timing?” or “is there a model answer for a 10-minute response I could look at?” Teachers are often more willing to help when it doesn’t feel like a big extra task. And if you already have extra time and a computer, that means your school is already supporting your needs—you’re not being “too speccy,” you’re just working with your brain, not against it.
You’re clearly working so hard and managing a lot on your own (plus the threat of the Lebanese mountains 💀). Keep going, don’t let perfectionism hold you hostage, and remember—an okay full answer always beats a perfect half one. You’ve got this. 💪

SORRY, i know it's lengthy but i totally feel u, i got indian parents and its nine or nothing otherwise im booted to the depth of the slums never to be seen again so.. HAVE A NICE EASTER THO!
