i agree that the writer portrays the boy as keeping faith in Santiago while deeply respecting each other, as the writer succesffuly makes the reader feel respect for the old man too due to his abundance of faith. When the boy describes their first time fishing together as 'slapping, banging, breaking and clubbing', it creates imagery to help convey the unforgettable and remarkable nature of their first time fishing, which has an effect on the emotions of the reader. On the other hand, the use of the words, 'slap' and 'bang' are onomatopoeic and instils a degree of trepidation in the reader. Despite this, the reader is reaffirmed that the boy was content about their fishing as he 'remebers everything from the first time they went together', conveying his respect for Santiago as he holds their first times in his memories and looks up to him as a paternal figure.
Alternatively, the writer portrays the depth of their relationship, almost as if Santiago was his own father, the writer successfully makes the reader aware of the respect they have for each other, and feels an almost envy-like feeling. As the boy prompts his remeberance of their first time fishing, Santiago 'looked at him with his sun-burned, confident loving eyes.' The use of asyndetic listening emphasises the amount of adoration Santiago emits for the boy and furthermore, tricolons are embedded to highlight the passionature nature of Santiago, juxtaposing the cruel and displeasing perception of him in the beginning. This creates a slow place, representing his acclaimation. On the other hand, 'sun-burned eyes', emphasises the complexity of his skin cancer, suggesting the struggles he's went through to catch fish, this evokes sympathy from the reader.
Lastly the writer, clearly shows the profound relationship between the two through the over idealised, displeasing image crafted of Santiago before he enters. As seen as the beginning of the extract, the old man conveys anaphora through 'you are in a lucky boat', repeating it near the end consecutively, creating a clear rhythm and emphasises how lucky the boy is, while highlighting Santiago's lasting misfortune. It also suggests his protectiveness over the boy, by painting his parents in a positive light and that he should stay with them for safety. This is emphasised to the reader when the next paragraph shifts the focus to the boy's perspective of his father as 'he hasnt much faith', establishing the writer as relatable, for making a statement about the social norms of the time, but also the tone of the entire text, foreshadowing events to come, like his father's lack of faith will lead them into the misfortune Santiago has, and wont get them very far.
