Which unis should I apply to?

I’m struggling so much with what to do about what uni/course to pick.
I’m in first year of a levels rn so i got time but still:
I currently do politics, geography and psychology and hoping to become an urban/town planner or similar.
I’ve looked at 3 courses, being:

MPlan urban planning degree at Loughborough
Pros: no.1 for building etc. (don’t quote me), it’s a Master of Planning degree
Cons: no accreditation yet (i think not sure), expensive to live there

BA in architecture and planning at UWE
Pros: accredited by RTPI and RIBA, offer a foundation course just incase a levels don’t go as planned
Cons: expensive to live there

Bsc Urban Planning and Development at Cardiff University
Pros: cheap to live there, has accreditation from RICS and RTPI
Cons: potentially hard to get into

Other places do courses as well, like Manchester etc. anybody have any advice?

Thank you ))

When you apply to university via UCAS, you get to apply to five courses / universities. So you could apply to each of those, plus two others. That means you don't need to make a decision any time soon, and gives you the opportunity to attend open days, offer-holder days, etc. in the hope that those will help you decide.

Go to some Uni Open Days in the next few months, and listen to the course/ subject presentations.
Are these subjects /careers actually what you thought they were about? What sort of placements or study abroad opportunities are on offer? What careers do their graduates go on to do? Etc etc.

(And btw, Loughborough is not 'expensive', and its an excellent 'tech' University with fantastic sports facilities.)

Also worth thinking about that Cardiff is in lots of financial trouble. So could be lots of cuts to staffing and maybe elements of the course.

Hi @BestMC26,

Now is a really good time to start thinking about your options so it's great that you've started to do that! Research is definitely the best way to decide which university you'd like to go to so looking at the course webpages / modules and attending Open Days to get an in person feel for the universities.

If you are considering UWE Bristol, we have an Open Day coming up on the 7th June and again in the Autumn. I'll link the page here for you to have a look Undergraduate Open Days - Open Days | UWE Bristol.

This is a really exciting time, enjoy the process and we will hopefully see you soon! 🙂

Thanks,

Courtney

Hi there,

It's awesome that you're considering Cardiff to study! I would say, if it's somewhere you wanted to study definitely give it a shot! When I was doing my A Levels, I had quite similar thoughts about universities but just decided to aim high and actually, ended up getting an offer for most of my choices

When it comes to all the conversations about cuts, please be reassured that these things are generally normal and are happening across a lot of universities, just at a bigger scale now! No decisions have been made and its all speculation at the moment - there's actually no guarantee that the cuts would be affecting the School of Geography or your urban planning degree.

Do feel free to send over a message if you had any questions about Cardiff I can help with
