Issues with parents before university

Hi!
I'm looking to start university in September of this year, but I know already that it will be a struggle financially. I've never got on well with my parents, and they're not financially supporting me. They kicked my sister out of the house in her second year and she was able to claim estrangement, but I'm not sure I would fit this criteria.
They keep on threatening and using my sister being thrown out (they say she left), and saying I should do the same, but I am unable to as I would have no financial support from now until September.
Due to my Dad's job, (mum is unemployed) I will only get around £4,800 maintenance loan, which isn't enough to cover accommodation, I have a part time job but I don't think I will have enough money.

What can I do? I don't plan on speaking with my parents when I go to university, but I still need somewhere to live. The household has been toxic for years due to my mothers alcoholism, and I want to get away, but just won't be able to support myself.

Any advice or ideas are welcome and needed, thanks.

Hi @Luke16w

I'm sorry to hear about this difficult experience. I can imagine that you have many financial concerns, and that is totally justified!

I would suggest contacting the university you are thinking of joining in September, more specifically the Finance team, as they may be able to give you advice and inform you about their available funding options (loans, scholarships, bursaries) and whether you would be eligible for any of them, and answer your queries in regards to your circumstances.

I would also suggest contacting their health and well-being centre/team, as they may be able to provide you with more support beyond the financial aspect. If you feel comfortable enough talking to them about your situation and concerns, you could try calling or emailing them as soon as possible, so you can work together to look for possible solutions.

I hope this helps 🙂

Thanks!
Do you think financial support may be likely? I remember asking Nottingham Trent during an open day and they said in a roundabout way that there's nothing they can do. I plan to go to Warwick or Sheffield.

Hi, if household income under £32k you will get full maintenance grant if evidence can be shown. You can also write regarding your situation when you apply for the grant, good luck

Thanks. Unfortunately the household income is enough to get me the lowest loan, but my parents won't financially support me. The system is broken
