Muslim students' experience at Durham?

I received an offer from Durham and wanted to know if there are any Muslim students here who are currently at Durham, and what their experience is like, and if they would recommend going there? I know Durham doesn't have a proper mosque, or even more than one mosque, so I'm worried about that, and additionally I know Durham has a bit of a reputation for being quite classist and discriminatory, so I wanted to know if this is actually true based on people's experiences? I have an offer from Leicester as well, but that is 3 hours away for me

My experience as someone who is Muslim has been quite positive. Although Durham is small, there is actually a quite good community of Muslims in Durham (there is also Durham University Islamic society). I personally haven't faced any issues with classism or discrimiation but that isn't to say it's not something that doesn't happen I feel like the Muslim community at Durham is quite welcoming and social and it does make you feel less alone so even if something does happen, you'll have the support from your community. Although we technically don't have a mosque in Durham city, we do have various prayer rooms around campus and the city so don't fret! I would recommend having a look at the Durham University Islamic society page as they'll have a range of different information about prayer rooms, social events, halal supermarkets and restaurants, etc 🙂
