Vet Med SAQ

Any tips about SAQ? Anything specific things that I should know or any specific things i shouldn't mention in it. Cuz people tell me SAQ is very important, even more important than personal statement.. is it true?
Also I'm doing work experience in a vet clinic right now, I have a few days left so I am wondering if I could know more about the SAQ so if I have any questions I can ask the vet or nurses beforehand.

Also any tips for vet interviews and do you guys know which vet school has the highest chance to get in in Uk?
And I kinda want to get into RVC, any tips please?

This link here is amazing and was super useful to me. It is quite old and a lot of information there is very likely to have changed, but a lot of the generic information about interview tips and the possible formats should still be super useful. It discusses each uni and what format they use, and I would not recommend you believe any of that, as its been like 3 years and many will have changed their format.

The generic interview tips are very valid though, in my opinion.

Just BTW, I'm currently a second year in liverpool, applied to RVC, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Liverpool, interviews for all except edinburgh, and offers from Liverpool and Nottingham.

On your first comment. I only had an SAQ for RVC, i dont know about what one should not say, but i will say that my questions were very generic, two had nothing to do with vet, and the third was pretty loose, it was clearly asking more about what traits you had and perceived as valuable in the career, as opposed to any specific vet knowledge. And for this SAQ i had time to answer, so it makes sense they dont ask anything specific cause you can look stuff up before you answer. so if knowledge like that was beneficial they wouldnt give you a window in which to do it.

is it more useful than the personal statement? probably, most unis i visited said they dont even read it. but still make a good one just in case they do haha.

im being ultra vague about the questions and i will continue to do so as i dont want the student room police getting me for leaking any information, i dont know how sensitive saq questions are in terms of whether they can be shared. but in terms of getting the most benefit from your work experience, its all about your ability to reflect on what you did. every interview i did asked about work experience in some form and it was often super vague, you are meant to provide something that happened and reflect on it. discuss its effect on you, what you learned, the vets actions etc, theres a good bit about this in the document at the start. If you havent already, i highly highly recommend you witness as many surgeries as possible, and (if possible) a euthanasia. I spoke about euthanasia during my liverpool interview and it think it worked really well as something to reflect on.

Im sure you can find what unis have the best acceptance rate online, but I really wouldnt recommend applying based on that, they are all super hard to get into, so pick the one that fits you the best as an individual. Not really such a thing as a "safety" option for vet med.

For RVC as much as id be willing to talk about my experience it was years ago now and they may well have changed the format significantly, i know liverpool has since my interview, so perhaps look on here for any info regarding RVC? you should be able to find an applicant or offer holder thread where someone talks about the format.

Hopefully the link i sent works, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask here or in dms, but be aware i cant imagine ill be allowed to give the exact questions i had for any interview or the SAQ.

I'd read the university's website really closely, see what they're looking for in particular and try to incorporate that throughout your answers with examples of how you've specifically shown that quality (e.g. during work experience or an extracurricular) to make it personal.

Also I don't think it's worth looking at 'the vet school with the highest chance of getting into' because they're all sort of the same. I tried playing that game by applying to UCLAN because I thought it would have less applicants but it ended up being the most competitive course I applied to! Just go for the ones you think you'd enjoy studying at.

You can check the Admissions stats post to see how many applications/ offers per place you have for each school (apart from H&K and Surrey, couldn't get their stats).
Beware of Glasgow and Edinburgh, as they have Scottish Fee students vs Rest of the UK and the admissions numbers are different for those categories.
Otherwise, as others mentioned - since there are only 11 vet schools in the UK and they are all similar standard, it's difficult to get into any of them. They also all have different assessment styles - so do your research and pick the ones you think you will do best.

For Bristol SAQ, I would recommend attending their online session (which they will run sometimes in Oct after the applications' deadline) as they do talk about the most common pitfalls. Which is not reading the quesiton properly and answering something completely different.
As suggested, do read their website thoroughly, Bristol prides itself in a new style of teaching - case study in groups. Have a read what this means.
I would also say that any vet school (or future emploers) rate your personal expereince (give examples) highly (even if they are failures - talk about mistakes learned) over any generic google answers.

The SAQ is definitely more important than the personal statement as most vet schools won't look at the personal statement and only the SAQ because it targets what they are looking for in their applicants. The personal statement only serves as a way for vet schools to choose between applicants with the same scores if it comes down to it.

As for the vet school with a highest chance to get into, it differs between national and international applicants so be careful when looking for statistics as they may not apply to you. A lot of vet schools, such as the RVC will have quite a lot higher acceptance rate for international students because they have less international applicants for the number of places they offer to them compared to UK students. These statistics however, often don't reflect the actual outcome of your application journey, the right vet school will genuinely pick you. Instead of picking vet schools through statistics, I recommend you asses each one based on if you would actually enjoy your time there (5 years is a long time!) so location, the way the course is taught, etc and if the admissions process fits you and highlights your strengths. I personally did best when having interviewers to chat with instead of the automated MMI system or Bristol's SAQ but I know for many it was the opposite and if you don't know which would work best try and have variation.

I am a UK student who applied to RVC, Nottingham, Liverpool and Surrey and I got offers from RVC and Nottingham. If you have any specific questions about the application process for those vet schools feel free to PM me.
Some general tips for RVC's interview: it is an MMI format with 6 stations and a group interview, make sure you practice answering questions with family, friends and teachers by finding vet school interview question banks online and letting them pick questions to ask you on the spot. Take some notes on general points you want to make when answering standard questions like "why you want to be a vet" and key moments from your work experience to refer to.

Good Luck!

the rvc supplementary form is for the admissions to better understand you as a person the questions are a lot more personal than typical interview questions and you just have to answer honestly, generally gear your answers towards veterinary medicine but don’t be afraid to stray away a bit and discuss your personal experiences in situations that may not directly apply to vet med the most important part is reflecting!!! As long as you show them that you are able to reflect and learn from your experiences no matter vet related or not that’s all they’re looking for
