The Student Room Group

should i accept rent contributions from my partner

Hello all,

I’m currently in 3rd year living in a house shared with my friends. My boyfriend is not on the lease but lives in my room with me (the girls in my house are fine with this). i have the smallest student loan which does not cover my rent in the slightest (i am still just over 2k short). My boyfriend lives with me in my room and i obviously pay the rent. I do the food shopping also (they contribute bits every now and again to food). However should i accept help with the rent as it’s been brought up lightly before but obviously i really struggle to pay it and i also supply the food for us both so is it okay to accept help from my partner towards rent? I feel awkward about it as i like to do things myself however they obviously are rent free and have a larger student loan than me. I’m just wondering what people’s thoughts are on this as it’s come up casually in conversation where they’ve mentioned being happy to contribute but when the time comes to pay rent i shy away from mentioning it and just pay it out of my own money. Although i really struggle to pay for rent and food for two i feel
somewhat guilty about accepting help??

He should absolutely pay half especially if hes not paying rent on his own place! He should also be contributing to your food shop. He currently has it cushty living rent free and not even paying towards to food hes eating! Hes taking you for a bit of a mug if he isnt paying
