SFE blocked payments - cant pay tuition fee

Hi,

i’m due to finish uni on 2nd may and graduate in july.

SFE have said they have blocked my payments as they overpaid in 1st year and because i didn’t raise the issue (i genuinely didn’t know as i get full funding and thought it was the correct amount) they have blocked my maintenance loan and tuition payment. i appealed it to the highest level and got nowhere with it.

i have got a part time job so i can do without my maintenance loan but i can’t find £6940 for my tuition fee.

i spoke to my uni and they said i have to pay it by 28th may but i cannot find the money anywhere, ive applied for government help (declined), tried personal loans credit cards etc (all declined) and even tried a gofundme but its getting no traction.

i genuinely don’t know how i will finish the course and SFE said i won’t be eligible for any finance for 6 years so resitting a year isn’t an option.

can anyone advise? i’ve exhausted all options and just looking for any similar experiences or advise on what to do next.

i’ll be absolutely devastated if i have to leave this close to the end when ive put everything into doing this and don’t see any other way without doing it.

thanks for reading!

Hi,

I’m very sorry to hear about your position, that’s awful. I hope you’ve been able to graduate and finish your uni experience by now.
I transferred unis 2 years ago and since, SFE have bombarded me with emails and letters with different overpayment depts none of which have ever matched. In total, they concluded I have been overpayed £120k and demanded I pay back before I finish university, taking away from my maintenance loan before it reaches my account. The amount of maintenance sent to my account over the last 3 years from sfe has totaled at £6.6k (113k short of what I supposedly owe). Today they have blocked my tuition fee with no reason and nobody accountable. It’s impossible to deal with and I have no clue what to do anymore.

If you were able to sort yours, any help would be appreciated otherwise it’s just making me angrier I’m not the only one

You need to ask SFE to provide an itemised list of how much money they paid, on what date, to whom, and what it was for. You can then check anything they paid to you personally (e.g. your maintenance loan) against your own records. And you can see what they paid to anyone else -- which presumably should be whatever university it was that you were studying at. Then you can check to see if that was the correct amount of money. Anything that you don't understand or that looks wrong you need to query with them.

If you've been through the complete complaints process and got nowhere, then you could try contacting your MP and see if they can take up your case. Another option might be to see if you can get the press involved.

To me, a claim that you've somehow been overpaid £120,000 seems ludicrous -- it sounds like something has gone very wrong somewhere.
