Funding and CPR

Hi,

I have two years of previous study on a BSc (Hons) Environmental Sciences with a Foundation Year (Year 0), in which I completed the foundation year before dropping out in May/ June of Year 1. I started my course on September 2019 before dropping out in May/ June 2021.

I haven't applied yet because I'm not sure if my compelling personal reasons for depression and anxiety will be accepted and 4 years have passed since I was in higher education. So, I would like to know if you can help and provide information on how much funding I would likely receive for the following two courses:

Bioengineering BEng (Hons) degree 4 years full-time with placement year or 3 years full-time

Materials Science and Engineering BEng (Hons) degree 4 years full-time with placement year or 3 years full-time

Thanks!

Hi EA_,

As you have 2 years previous study, you would need to self fund year 1 of the new course if you are starting again from year 1. The exception to this would be, as you mentioned, Compelling Personal Reasons. You would just need to upload a cover letter to your account to explain that you wish to apply for the additional year for the Tuition Fee Loan. You will also need to provide a professional 3rd party letter that confirms what happened, when this happened and how this directly impacted your studies.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Thanks for your reply regarding the CPR.

I just wanted to clarify that if I self funded year 1 of a 4 year course would I still receive funding for the remaining 3 years of the course or only 2 years? vs the 3 year course where the remaining 2 years would be funded.

Also, if I self fund the first year, do I receive maintenance for that year?

Thanks!

Hi EA_,

Yes, you would be eligible for years 2, 3 and 4 of the course. You are entitled to the Maintenance Loan in year 1, only the Tuition Fee Loan is affected by your previous study.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Apologies but I forgot to add the following to my previous query.

With one of my uni options it is possible I may be accepted onto a foundation year rather than first year due to the L3 course I studied. In that case what is the maximum number of years SFE funds a course for? I wanted to know if it would be an issue if I decided to do a placement year or study abroad year in the future?
Would 5 years be funded if the CPR is accepted?
Or if not accepted and I funded the foundation year, then would I receive funding for the placement or study abroad year?

Thanks!

Hi there, did you received any qualifications for the year you had completed for the Environmental Sciences with a Foundation Year course? Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

I did not leave with any qualification only 120 foundation year credits.

My old university sent me my academic transcript after I withdrew which says "(Degree of Bachelor of Science - attempted but NOT conferred) - No award conferred." under the Information Identifying the Qualification section.

Hi,

With the information provided, can you confirm if I would need to self fund the foundation year or if it would be fully funded?

Thanks!

Hi,

The previous study calculation is the course length +1 additional year - previous study years = entitlement.

This means that generally it would be the first year that is affected if you have 2 years previous study.

For example, if you have 2 years previous study and are now attending a 5 year course including a foundation year, it would be 5+1-2= 4 years. That means you would be funded in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 but would need to self fund the foundation years fees unless you have acceptable CPR evidence.

Thanks, Clare
