Why it's important to be a part of a society at University :)

I've almost finished my second year of university and it was made tremendously better by being a part of a society so I thought I'd hop on here and give my reasons as to why I think everyone should join any kind of society at University.

Firstly, it helps differentiate your academics from your personal life. As an Esports student I spend a lot of time in front of computers and games so being able to do cheerleading on the side really helped me with enjoying my degree and free time more because of this separation.

I was able to try something that wasn't a thing back home. I'm from a proper small village up north so seeing cheerleading I was like woah this is sick let me try that. I always wanted to be involved with performance based stuff so now that I'm able to alongside my Esports degree is actually amazing and it's made me so grateful to go to University of Staffordshire.

Speaking on that, my social life improved massively. I was pretty recluse starting university and I was so scared to even consider joining cheerleading but that initial push brought me into one of my new favourite things in the world.

So yeah that's why I recommend a society to everyone considering joining one, especially for the next academic year.
If anyone has any further questions about societies or University of Staffordshire feel free to write them here

Level 5 Esports Student at University of Staffordshire
Hi everyone!

Fantastic to hear Kurtis' story - indeed being part of a society can open up a lot of really positive doors for you.

Did you also know...

Societies can give you skills for your CV - here at Bath from second year onwards you can be involved with societies' committees, such as event/social get-together organising, chairing, managing finances - all of these things translate as project management, leadership and financial skills you could talk about on your grad CV. Especially useful if you're not doing a placement 🙂

Societies can allow you to try something new you may end up really enjoying - like Kurtis and the cheerleading, I had an international friend at uni who took up a martial art when he got here and ended up really enjoying it, and participating in competitions around the country.

Societies can open up a new network of friends - from different courses and year groups, giving you more chances to meet people with similar interest to you.

Looking forward to hearing more!
