speech and lanaguage therapy person statement

Can I apply my previous experience within retail customer service to my speech and language therapy ucas personal statement ?

I use to babysit but I wouldn't be able to provide proof of this

I have nursery work experience (3months)
Did alot of reading time with small groups which helped one child to feel more confident speaking and they even pronunciation improved, helped another child to feel comfortable to talk myself and other members of staff through play and name animals and types of vehicles and one child had a speech therapist come to do an assessment ( could watch from a distance), did alot of reading on child development

Life experiences _ sibling with autism who attended speech therapy but we were both in primary school at the time ,

I am trying to find other experiences before I apply that could relate as I'm not too sure if my work /Personal experiences would br enough to show my passion for the field.

Hi

Absolutely yes you can apply for the speech and language therapy with your previous experience you have.....

Your previous customer service experience in retail is absolutely amazing as you have already got the necessary skills for communicating with patients and families as that's a big part of the job talking with people so community is a must.

I would link any previous employment you have done that has experience talking with people to your personal statement.

I was working in retail full-time when I eventually got accepted for university to study as a midwife and I use a lot of my experience from there for it ( customer communication, technology skills, stock control etc) and got into university,- ( still currently working part-time in retail) and yes I have been a qualified registered midwife since 2019 .

Good luck with your application 🙂 🙂 🙂

As above, your experience in retail is very relevant to the role as unis want to see that you can deal with the general public. Unis also like to see shadowing experience to show that you understand the role of an SLT, so contact your local NHS trust and ask for a day of shadowing in a hospital or community clinic.

Shadowing certainly isn’t required. Wider reading would be sufficient for understanding the role of the speech therapist.

Shadowing was recommended at the uni open days we attended.

Shadowing is notoriously difficult to get and is rarely if ever specified as an essential requirement on entry requirement pages. Whilst there are some SLT departments in the country that are willing to offer it, many don’t and it’s not worth stressing over. I got in with no shadowing, as did at least 95% of my cohort. Wider reading around the role is actually going to be more valuable as work experience or shadowing with a single SLT is not going to give you the exposure to the range of settings and roles that an SLT fulfils.
The main thing to prioritise when preparing an application is relevant exposure to working with different client groups. Children in mainstream, little ones in nursery, children in special schools, elderly patients, adults with learning disabilities, even adults and children with EAL. These experiences will give you the knowledge, insights, and skills that they’re looking for.

When I interview candidates I encourage them to discuss their personal background, educational, and work/volunteering experience. Not everyone has the opportunity to spend time shadowing a SLT or working as an assistant so it is about drawing upon wider experiences and seeing how this relates to the profession. So all of the examples you mentioned fit into this: personal (sibling with autism), educational/volunteering (nursery work experience), and work (baby sitting / retail).

Most of your experiences are quite developmental / paediatric in nature so I would perhaps look at improving your knowledge of how SLTs work with adults to broaden your awareness of the profession as you will have to complete learning and placements in both areas as part of the course.
