Life Outside of University

Hi Everyone 👋🏽

I am a final year mature student studying at the University of Salford. Since it is the Easter break, student life is a bit quieter. Consequently, I have had the chance to reflect on everything I have been able to do outside of university since moving to Salford and even add a few more exciting things to the list!

The opportunities outside of university ended up being an important deciding factor when I was deciding where to study because I found it difficult to decide based on the course alone. Therefore, I thought I would share my Top Tips for anyone who maybe a first-year settling into life at university or for any prospective students...

1. Explore the Area 🏙

This is especially fun if you have moved away from home for university, as often you will be living in a new area. It is a great way to get to know new coursemates by inviting them to join you exploring the area.

If you are city-based (or near a city like me), then there are plenty of things to do (some are free, or if you check apps like Student Beans or UniDays or just ask, you might get a student discount).

For example:

🚶Guided tours
🎨 Art galleries
🖼 Museums
🍲 Student deals at your favourite food restaurants
🎭 Theatre
📽 Cinema
🕹 Arcades

My favourite is games/arcade venues where you can grab some food and drink whilst playing old video games and pinball!

2. Nature 🏞

Lots of us got into this more during the pandemic, and I know it is certainly something I have carried on being interested in. You can engage with nature in a range of ways:

🚵 Bike Rides in your local area: Sometimes you can hire bikes if you don't own one.
🚶Walks in the local park
👨 Support a Community Garden: This can be a great way to get to know local residents and your area
⛰️ Hike: If you have a friend who drives, or you can get public transport somewhere and go for a hike.

In my case, this is heading off to the beautiful Peak District either driving or hopping on a train!

3. Keeping Fit ⚽️

It is good for your physical and mental health to keep active whilst studying. I certainly find I can concentrate more easily the day after a gym session myself, and it can be a fab way to make friends. Some of these tie into 'Nature'; here are a few ideas:

🏋 Join a local gym
💃 Take up a dance class
🏃 Join the local park run
🏹 Try a new sport: E.g., I have joined the local athletics team and will be learning how to throw a javelin!

I'm excited to see what everyone else's suggestions for fun things to do outside of university are!
