From Freshers to Second Year: How I’ve Grown at Uni

Hey everyone! I’m in my second year studying Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering at City, St George’s, University of London, and I wanted to share a bit about how much I’ve grown since starting uni!

Freshers week feels like it was just yesterday I was honestly a mix of nervous and excited. Everything was so new: new people, new routines, a whole new way of learning. Getting used to lectures, labs, and how uni actually works was a bit of a challenge at first, but it gets easier (I promise!).

Fast forward to now I’m so much more confident and involved than I ever thought I’d be! I joined a society in Term 1 of first year. and now I’m the President of a different society in second year, which has been such a fun and rewarding experience. I also became a Student Ambassador in first year and now I’m a Senior Student Ambassador so I’ve had loads of chances to meet new people, help out at events, and grow my skills.

Through my degree, I’ve developed loads of valuable skills like problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and time management, as well as technical knowledge in anatomy, medical physics, and device design. One of my favourite projects so far has been a group assignment where we had to design a medical device my team worked on creating a sleep apnea monitoring device. It was such a great way to apply what we’d learned in lectures to a real-world healthcare challenge, and it really helped strengthen my ability to collaborate, research, and present our ideas.

One big thing I’ve learned? Just go for it. Uni is the perfect time to try new things, step out of your comfort zone, and figure out what you enjoy. Join a society (or three), go to events, talk to people, and don’t be afraid to get involved you never know where it might lead!

If you’ve got any questions about the course, uni life, or just wanna chat, feel free to reach out! Always happy to help! 😊✨
