At what point does AI become academic misconduct?

I mean if a student got AI to write an assignment of course that would be wrong but what if you used it to check something you wrote for spelling or grammar etc. or in programming to check your code before submitting it. At what point does AI become academic misconduct?

Depends on the university and course.

I’m personally against using AI (bar translation stuff when absolutely necessary and the built in Microsoft spell check). It doesn’t even cross my mind to use AI, let alone ChatGPT.

Despite this and me telling people on here not to use unauthorised AI in the first place if they don’t want be trialed for academic misconduct, I think that universities and schools need to let the cat out of the bag at some point (might be too early to do that now). Even workplaces are using ChatGPT for work, teachers are using it for planning purposes, I’m literally having to proofread pages of professional text that were put into DeepL then copied and pasted as is from French to English etc

The problem is that the English (in my view) are far too inflexible and bureaucratic when it comes to education (and making change) to the point where I’ve seen lecturers online complaining about the bureaucracy. Think Germany or France’s level of bureaucracy except that applies (in my view) to state education in England. I had no idea how bad it was before reading opinions online from teachers and lecturers.
