Favourite Parts of Campus: From Bank Plain to the Student Shop and Library

Hi Everyone! I'm Charlotte, a year 2 Graphic Design student here at Norwich University of the Arts, and in this blog I shall be introducing you to my favourite parts of our campus. Our city-centre campus is home to media labs, art studios and various other creative spaces across 13 buildings, mingled amongst the city's cafes, bars, galleries and shops. But for me, 3 specific areas stand out.

Bank Plain
Bank Plain is a Grade II listed building that was once home to the newly founded Barclays Bank in 1775, and more recently home to the OPEN Youth Trust. Now, it is become the hub for our university, with work currently undergoing to make this the new home for the student union and cafe, the library and more. For the past year, I have found this to be one of my favourite locations to sit and get my work done outside of my timetabled hours. With plenty of chairs, tables, lights and sofas dotted around the project hall to provide plenty of space to sit with friends to hang out and work on projects together, it also plays host to subject 'takeovers' each week. Seeing each course come in and transform the project hall into an exhibition of their work from that week is really exciting and I really enjoy seeing what my fellow students get up to and seeing it come together.

Student Shop
The Student Shop is another of my favourite places and is located in our Duke Street building. Open on week days 10-3, the shop sells a range of basic and specialist art supplies at a much lower cost than the high street shops. Not only is this extremely convenient for courses where we may constantly be needing new materials or one-off sheets of coloured card etc, but it's also great to see so many re-cycled materials be used too. There is a collection point for used pens and ink cartridges, as well as spot where you can pickup people's leftover materials for free!

Library
Also located in the 19th century (but fully accessible) school building is the library. Housing 38,000 printed volumes specialising in resources devoted to arts, design, architecture and media - it's a great place to get inspired within your subject area and collect new sources for any essays you may have due. As well as books, the library enables you to borrow DVD's and computer games which can be easily renewed online. The staff in the library are always so lovely and happy to help with any query you may have, and also has computers to use, tables to sit at and access to photocopying, printing and scanning.

Of course there is much more to the campus than the three places that I have picked out to write about today, and you can find out more about the campus facilities here: https://norwichuni.ac.uk/university-life/facilities/ .

Hello,

Thankyou for this Charlotte! NUA is beautifully located and has great arts facilities 🙂

I am a former Bath student and would like to take this opportunity to share my personal top 3 places on Bath's campus:

The library

library.jpg

We are super-proud of library! It operates from 9-5 on weekdays but is open to students 24/7, 365 days of the year. It has 5 floors - at the bottom is a shared group space with tables and computers, and as you go up floors the quiet study policy gets more stringent, so that if you prefer to study in the quiet there is a floor for you at the top. However you prefer to do your work 🙂

The lake

lake2.jpg

Bath's lake is the Uni's little piece of nature. Its home to a community of mallard ducks who roam around campus freely, and a key spot for taking a break at lunchtime or doing some wild revision. A lovely place to go in the summer for a picnic or cold drink with friends, or on your own for some peace and quiet!

The Chancellor's building

chancellors.jpg

The Chancellor's building is a modern lecture theatre which is shared by all courses. It rears up to the sky, is glass and gold coloured and has colour changing mood lights suspended from its ceiling. It has 2 large lecture theatres on the bottom floor and a series of modern teaching and group study rooms on its five other floors. From the top of Chancellor's you can see the whole of Campus.

I could go on but that would make for a very long post! I hope this helped showcase some of Bath's best bits 🙂 best of luck with your decisions everybody.

Hi Charlotte!

Was great to read your post, about your favourite spots on Campus. I have never been to Norwich, have you got any favourite spots / places to recommend to visit? Maybe I will take a trip there one day!

Here's a few of my personal favourite spots on DMU Campus

These photos were taken in and around the Vijay Patel Building, home to the ADH (Art, Design, and Humanities) faculty. The first photo shows a view from one of the windows, featuring the iconic staircase that everyone says looks like it’s straight out of Harry Potter.

The second photo is from the balcony on the 4th floor, a spot I love visiting, especially in the summer ☀️

Just beside our campus flows the River Soar. I really enjoy spending time there, sitting on a bench, going for a walk or run along the path, t’s so peaceful. The river is full of swans, ducks, canal boats, and you’ll often spot the DMU rowing team practicing on the water 🦆🦢

And of course, I have to mention the Kimberlin Library, I especially love the bookable study rooms. As a third-year student, those quiet, individual spaces have been a life saver for my productivity 📚

Hi there! Thank you so much for another great post to add to this thread 🙂

Top Recs for a Norwich visit from me would include the cathedral, the plantation gardens and of course the castle! Also the incredible Norwich market - the largest permanent market in Europe... has the most perfect food businesses!
