Northampton Uni vs Coventry for OT

I've had an offer from both Northampton and Conventry for Occupational Therapy Bsc 2025 entry. I've been to the open days and the vibes were so different!

Distance wise Northampton is closer to me (30 min car commute vs 1 hr 20 for Coventry) which is perfect because I'm a parent. But facility wise Coventry is by far on another level to Northampton. The teaching staff at Coventry were more engaging than they were at Northampton. But this was based on a very short time so it may be unfair to assume this so early on. I've been sold by the distance to Northampton up until the open day and now I feel a bit underwhelmed by the vibe I got.

Anyone got inside knowledge or experience at either unis? How have you found it?

Congratulations.

The world is short of healthcare professionals, UK is no exception. Graduates are almost 100% employed, so you need not consider prestige or rankings.

How old is your kid? You may treat yourself as a working parent here. I was a working parent doing 2 hour commute two-way. Looking back, I would say I need my boys more than they did. I wish I had more time listening, talking, sharing their emotions.

Purely personal, choose Nottingham.

Gosh that is a difficult choice to make! Such a shame to feel like you are missing out on your preferred choice. Prehaps spend some time on thinking about what a 1hr20 commute would actually mean? Which time of the day would the lectures be, what time would you leave and get home, does the commute change length at the times you need to travel, likeyhood of traffic delays, how many days a week would you actually need to go in for lectures.

Balance that with more research into what the courses are like, to see if it was just a bad day at Northampton.

Here is some data on coventry about OT from discoveruni : https://www.discoveruni.gov.uk/course-details/10001726/135/FullTime/

I'd recommend you ask for copies of this year's timetables for all years of the course so that you can see what to expect and how it would work with travel times. Also, look at placement locations and timings. Some unis use big chunks of the standard uni holidays for placements and other don't.

I’m starting at Northampton in 2025 - on the extended version so a longer uni year but less attendance as it’s over an hours drive from me, I’m a parent and a carer for my mum so fits in best for me! I hadn’t looked at Coventry. Just wondering what put you off the vibe at Northampton? I thought the tutors were super engaging at the discovery day.

Personally I’d go for the closer one - kiddo and a full time course is already a lot without adding in hours of extra commuting a day, the courses all qualify you for the same career

Hey! I ended up choosing Northampton in the end, mostly because of the distance. Honestly, I’m still a bit unsure. It was my fourth open day, and compared to the other universities, Northampton gave off the strangest vibe to both me and my partner. But I’m putting that down to the one lecturer we met and trying not to let it overshadow the rest of the experience!
