Help! Should I apply to top universities or aim lower?

I am a Year 12 student studying A-level History, Mathematics and Economics. I’m interested in applying to Political Science related subjects (HSPS, Politics and International Relations etc.). I want to apply to Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Warwick… But I’ve been feeling like my stats aren’t good enough for these and it’s best to aim for safer options that I’ll know I’ll get into.

My targets grades are AAA right now so when I do my mocks I’ll hopefully get my predicted grades to A*AA. My GCSE grades were 8887777766 with the 66 in both English’s. I’m doing an EPQ also. And I’m also definitely eligible for a Contextual offer.

What should I do? Is it better to aim lower for unis I’ll definitely get into or just apply for my dream unis?

You should do both.

You get to apply for five universities / courses. If you "aim lower for unis I’ll definitely get into" you may well get five offers. But what's the point in that? You can only choose one firm and one insurance. So to "waste" your other three choices on unis you'll "definitely get into" seems like a waste of time.

Equally, if you apply to five very competitive unis, you run the risk of getting no offers.

So apply to two or three "aspirational" ones and two or three where you feel more confident of an offer. Hopefully you'll then have a range of offers from which to make your firm / insurance decision.

In my own opinion I say you should go for whichever university you want to go to. Just remember to reserve one spot at least for uni you know you'll be guaranteed into

If you can definitely get a contextual offer, even the top unis usually reduce offers to AAB, so both your current, and potential A*AA PGs would leave you with strong potential for an offer.

5 choices:
1 very strong option: Cambridge
2 optimistic, but fair choices: LSE/ UCL
2 safer/ 1 safe and 1 slightly less safe: Warwick+ one you’ll be happy with and definitely get.

Note that without a contextual, this will be a very risky selection( even still with potentially), so if not ensure you include 2 safer options, but make sure you apply to Cambridge, LSE and UCL if they’re your dream( particularly if you get the contextual)!

Most universities have a high offer rate for most subjects so that suitably qualified candidates have an very strong chance of getting an offer. The only problem comes when people load up their application with an Oxbridge, LSE/UCL/KCL/Imperial and then another top choice or two, or have low predicted grades (or not the right subjects) and get too ambitious. Doing this, you can easily be left with one or zero offers. Otherwise, people with "typical" circumstances, applying to a subject that is not econ, CS, medicine, law etc., not loading up on top choices, matching entry requirements will get offers from all or most of their "realistic" choices.

Warwick already has a fairly high offer rate for PAIS but you probably want another that you are likely to get into and not another "top" option. UCL had a 17% offer rate for political sciences last year, LSE between 10% and a quarter depending on the precise politics course, and Cambridge about 18% as well. So these could conceivably all be rejections and you should plan with that idea (maybe Warwick firm and your fifth choice insurance - swapping out Warwick for one of the London universities/Cambridge perhaps).

Your stats are fine they don't really look into GCSEs unless your A levels aren't exactly what they're looking for. Since you have As and above that's not an issue. Make a really good personal statement showing your interest and talk about your EPQ, all of these things needs to make you stand out. I advise maybe do 2 dream unis and the rest some good enough unis you wont mind going to. I got offers from LSE and UCL, just make sure you really focus on your personal statement and show how you really like Politics and IR, I applied for the same thing.

Thanks that’s helpful! I only just saw your reply lol. Do you have any book/supercurricular recs by any chance? Right now I’m reading When Victims Become Killers: Colonialism, Nativism, and the Genocide in Rwanda by Mahmood Mamdani and just finished ‘Dust’ by Yvonne Owour + ‘Orientalism’ Edward Said but not sure if these are scholarly enough, I heard that’s what they’re looking for (on the personal statement). Also I’d just generally like to expand my knowledge so I’m thinking these would be okay?

Hi betzm911, from my perspective (not an expert) your credentials for applying to top universities seem great! You have great A-Level predicted grades and strong GCSEs, so I would recommend pushing yourself for your dream universities! Be mindful when applying through UCAS that is it good to have a range of universities with varying grade requirements (from ambitious choices to safer choices based off grades), but grades aren't everything in applying for university, and many admissions teams would be impressed by supercurriculars and wider reading around your field of interest.
My advice would be to keep working one your grades whilst developing your broader subject knowledge, and you'll do great!
Wishing you all the best 🙂

Hi!

When it comes to applying to universities, you have to think tactically.

You abseloutely should apply to your dream uni's! I think you definately do have a shot at getting into them, grades wise, and do also think that if you don't apply, it'll likely be something that you'll really regret not going for.

However, no matter how confident you are or are not that you'll get into your dream uni's, it's so important to pick a reasonable insurance choice. I'd definately say to apply to a few of the unis that you're confident about so you have a reasonable insurance choice to fall back on.

A strong personal statement is also key, so make sure you're doing a lot of wider reading, and highlighting any extra curricular activities that you're doing.

Best,
