Cant even get a part time job.

Hi, honestly don't know what to say. So I had interview with Boots yesterday and I thought I nailed my interview only to get rejection email 2 hours later. I've been giving interview non stop for last 2 months. I have given 12 retail interviews (boots, nationwide, national trust, h&m, primark, cards direct, virgin 02) to name some. I try to follow STAR method, I have all the examples from describe a time when you worked in a team, helped someone, solved a problem stuff. Am I doing something. I also tell them I'm fully flexible, I'm a recent graduate who just want a minimum paying job nothing else. I have rewritten my coverletter, cvs, filled numerous online assistant which take hours. I've lost hope now, maybe I'm just unlucky, no one understands me when I tell them that I can't be able to get a job. Can someone help me with what am I doing wrong? Maybe I made the wrong decision to come to UK for education, I'm on PSW rn, I am not looking for sponsorship, I don't intend to live in UK after my visa ends. I just want a job that's help me stay in UK until my visa runs out. Is my visa a problem that even low minimum paying jobs prefer people who are British or on ILR? Would be really helpful if someone can tell if my visa is a problem, I don't mind going back home then and accepting my fate ).

So I think one thing you can recognise and be quite proud of is that you are getting a lot of interviews. This is a very encouraging sign - many don't even get to the interview stage! The fact that you're getting interviews indicates for me that the cover letter and CV aren't the issue. It may be that the issue is they know you aren't looking for a permanent job and are reluctant to hire someone who will be leaving in the near future.

You might have better luck therefore by looking for roles through a temp agency - as those jobs are by definition temporary assignments the company is using the agency to fill, the fact you aren't able to commit to a long term or permanent position is not an issue. Given that your CV is good enough to get you these interviews, and it sounds like you're doing the right thing in interviews, this might be a better way to find a role that fits your needs

Could you elaborate what is a temp agency? I haven't heard about it. All I do is apply on company website, yeah I'm very good at cracking ATS and online assessment so I do land interviews almost every week. I just missed one today with M&S as I'm so emotionally drained after putting in so much. I don't think I have missed one company lol from supermarkets to stationery shops like smiggle. I've just accepted the fact that maybe the problem is me since no one wants to hire me. Which is fine since I'm happy to go back home if my visa is an issue and such companies do want british or people with settled status. My visa is till July next year 2026 to be exact.

They're companies which basically other companies go to and say "we need someone to work for 4 weeks/5 days/3 months in this role" and then the temp agency will find a temporary worker for the role. In this situation the temp agency is the employer of the worker, and they are paid by the company which put out the assignment - from which the worker is paid.

The other thing is with temp agency work, since the work is temporary and not guaranteed while temp assignments can be ended early, you can also exit them early pretty easily. Equally they can also be extended by the company that originally offered the assignment, and some may also have "temp to perm" contracts where you start as a temporary worker then subject to performance may be made full time (obviously this isn't really as suitable for your needs).

A large national temp agency is Brook Street for example. Also quite a few unis use unitemps (although equally many run their own temping schemes internally separate to that). Office Angels is another one I've seen around. There are likely many smaller local ones as well however.

It's worth noting temp agencies more tend to recruit for office roles, but since you're a graduate I think this shouldn't be an issue (and may be a better option too).

Also since your visa is quite a while then you could look for fixed term contract (FTC) roles - these are kind of similar but rather than being put out via a temp agency they're just run directly by the company you are doing the work for (and therefore you are employed by that company, rather than the temp agency). These are very common in universities, although also not uncommon in other medium to larger businesses.

Do they hire people who don't have experience? I've tried retail a lot and I've nailed many interviews like the other day I interviewed with primark and they scored me 21 out of 25 for competency based questions but I haven't heard from them so I dunno. The boots one I nailed on perfectly she didn't graded me but that interview was even better than Primark one. I'll love an office role so these temp agencies help you find work? How do I get in touch with them. Sorry if I'm asking a lot of questions I was thinking maybe my visa is a problem and no one is gonna hire me cuz eventually I'll have to leave next year so I'll probably go back to home country any way then.

Depends on the assignment, some they don't look for much experience. If you have literally never worked any job in your life though then that might be an issue and you might want to look at e.g. volunteering opportunities near you to get some proper work experience. But even without that they may be able to find an assignment for you.

You don't have to accept an assignment if they offer it to you (although they may let you know they can't offer you assignments anymore if you turn down several consecutively), so there's really no harm in just registering with some temp agencies and seeing what you find.

If you look on any kind of jobs site you'll see various temporary roles being advertised by recruiting or temp agencies, if you apply to that you'll invariably end up on their books and they might contact you with other stuff. They also usually have their own websites you can register with (such as the aforementioned Brook Street).

Literally if you just google "UK temp agency" you'll find a lot of information and options...

Oh thank you so much 🙂 yeah I've just gotten out of uni so haven't worked, I did some volunteering with Cancer Research and did a trading assistant role with Sainsbury's for a month but my supervisor was really toxic so I ended up leaving sadly ☹️ thank you soo much for your helpp. I'll look into it for sure.
