Student Finance Child Dependants Section

Hi,

I am currently in the process of applying for student finance for next academic year and have a query about the child dependants section of the application. My brother has turned 18 and is taking a gap year next year before going to university, so next academic year he will not be in education. He currently earns no money but plans on getting a job in his year out, but regardless he is dependent on my parents for basic living costs such as food and utility bills as he does not have the money to pay for these things himself. However, my parents do not give him money so that he can pay for basic needs himself, rather they themselves pay for these needs directly out of their own accounts. Regarding this, I was wondering if there would need to be direct evidence of my parents transferring money to my brother for him to count as a child dependant, or whether my parents could submit evidence of them paying for living costs to show that my brother isn’t paying towards these himself.

Hi there. They can submit the evidence to show they pay his basic costs, and his bank statements will show he doesn't receive any money of pay for these necessities himself. Thanks, Leah.

My brother does not have any direct costs of his own to pay, rather my parents pay their for their own costs and because my brother lives in the same house as them, some of these costs go towards him. Would it still be sufficient if my parents submitted evidence of them paying their costs such as utility bills, food etc or would my brother need to have his own individual costs to pay in order for him to be classed as financially dependent on my parents?

Hi there,

If they are not financially assisting him (paying bills for him, accommodation) then they would select 'no' for that section.

Thanks, Jason
