Term 3 - what goes on?

At a recent open day it was explained that terms 1 and 2 are teaching, whilst term 3 is mostly revision and exams with very little teaching contact time. I'm looking at studying psychology.

Is this true? Surely there must be more than that in term 3.

Any current students able to comment?

I think this is consistent with most universities, including what went on at mine (UWE).

You’ll be taught everything in terms 1 and 2 and have your exams in term 3. The only times this may vary is when you do your Masters course where you will still be doing your project until May/June (I was doing my lab project until the end of May) with the hand in date in July with your results in September.

You may also have any additional retakes during this time (coursework or exams) taken earlier in the year. Term 3 is more for assessments than anything, meaning most staff take their annual leave during this time.

I think the only students who do a form of assessments are people who do term time placements I.e nurses as it is effectively meant to be a four year course but it’s squeezed into 3 years as they work through their summers on their placements.

I’m in my final year of psychology. We have two weeks of revision lectures (I think I have about three/ four lectures a week) and then the exam period. I’m done with exams by the end of May meaning I have June completely off (but I still have accommodation) before I graduate in July (the week after term end). Last year I spent some of this time starting to have diss meetings and stuff but generally there’s not much to do apart from enjoy Durham and the (hopefully) sunny weather )

Hello!

Yes I would say that's mostly the case. In my experience as an Economics student, we usually only have revision lectures in Term 3 and my friend in Psychology told me it's the same situation too! Some degrees like Law do have lectures in third term but I believe most departments try to get everything done by Easter break.

Hope this helps!

That's really useful - thank you.

My dad was saying that when he did his engineering degree that all three terms had lectures except for about 4 weeks when exams took place.

Seems as though there were a lot more contact hours back then! And no student loans!

Did you feel there was enough support for you. As I felt at the offer holder day that support from lectures were a lot less compared to other uni i have looked at. Plus I was told contact hours 4-6 hours were in first year which is much lower did u feel this was enough?

If that's 5 hours a week for only the first two terms, that works out as only about 100hours total in the first year. That's like studying a single a level.

That's about £95 per hour based on tuition fees of £9500. 100 hours is only about 3 working weeks.

Sorry, but that's appalling value!

Your uni fees don’t just pay for lectures. They pay for facilities, including things like library access and software that you may need for your course.

Personally I’ve been fine but I’m quite good at independent study so this may be different dependent on how you learn etc.
