Bournemouth or Swansea for Psychology

Which is better in terms of student life, accommodation and experiences?

Hi there!

Great question - both Bournemouth and Swansea are fantastic university towns with a lot to offer, so it really depends on what kind of experience you're looking for.

Bournemouth is known for its vibrant student community, beachside location, and lively nightlife. The student union runs loads of event, with under 100 clubs and societies. The town has a buzzing atmosphere, especially in summer with festivals, beach parties and more.

We offer a wide range of student accommodation. Prices typically range from £150-£200 per week, depending on the type and location. All university accommodation includes bills and access to ResLifeBu activities and support, as well as an optional buss pass worth around £295. Bournemouth is great for beach lovers, nightlife fans, and those who enjoy a busy town centre. There's plenty to do, from paddle boarding and beach cafes to gigs and festivals. If you're after a coastal, energetic experience, with lots of events and a modern feel, Bournemouth might be your best bet. If you prefer a slightly quieter lifestyle with a strong sense of community, Swansea could be ideal.

You might also want to check out course specifics for Psychology at both unis, as teaching styles, placement opportunities, and module options can vary quite a bit.

Let me know if you’ve got more questions! 😊

Which is better in terms of student life, accommodation and experiences?

Hi!
I am a current Psychology student in my Placement year. I thought I would add about my personal experience with psychology. I feel very content with my experience here at Bournemouth University. The lecturers are really supportive and engaging and our department is fairly big and a lot of the publications are in known journals, some even made it to the Parliament debates. The most important thing for me is that it is easy for me to reach out to my tutor, lecturers, anyone in the department. They are happy for you to ask questions and even get involved in research assistant opportunities with them. Regarding placement, I received a lot of support as well, before and during it.

To answer the question about student life and experiences, I think the other rep pretty much covered all of it. I would add that Bournemouth University is a medium-sized university in a coastal town so there is a lot to get involved with. The accommodation blocks are all in one place which is so convenient and fun. They're so close to the beach as well. Bournemouth is also only 1.5-2 hours away by train from London which is so convenient!

Whether you choose Swansea or Bournemouth, make sure you go with the university that feels most right and fit for you. I would also highly recommend visiting both universities as well. Good luck and please don't hesitate to ask more questions, I would happily answer!

Hi there! 👋

As a student who’s been at Swansea University for three years, I’ve honestly loved my time here. Swansea is such an affordable and student-friendly city and with a big student population, there’s always something happening making it easy to feel at home.

🏡 Accommodation
One thing I’ve really appreciated is how convenient and social the accommodation options are. Singleton Campus (where phsycology is based) has its accommodation right on the beach making it easy to meet up with friends for bonfires, bbq and so much more. On the other hand, off-campus areas like Uplands, Brynmill or city-centre accommodations are super close-knit and full of students, so even if you’re not by the beach, you’re surrounded by friends, cafés, and all the essentials. Either way, you win!

🎉 Student Life
With over 150 societies and 50+ sports clubs, there's loads to get involved in, whether you’re into gaming, dance, volunteering, or anything in between. I’ve met some of my closest friends through societies and events here! Explore Swansea societies - https://www.swansea-union.co.uk/get_involved/societies/

🔒 Safety
I easily adjusted to living in Swansea because of how safe it is, it really helped me settle in as a first-year international student. Swansea recently ranked 7th safest student city in the UK as well which speaks volumes about the kind of environment you can expect here. So going out or late night walks are coupled with both fun and security.

If you’ve got more questions or just want a student’s take, feel free to drop me a message.
