Calculator for accounting and finance

Do I need a scientific calculator or a graphical calculator for an accounting and finance degree? Is either even necessary? I currently have the Casio FX-991EX one, which is kind of broken but still in working condition. I'm thinking of ordering a new one for my a levels, however, my only concern is that it won't be worth it and that I won't even use it in uni?

I would recommend a graphical , it is very useful in A-levels and gives a definite advantage compared to the other options. And I personally still used it a lot when I was in university and doing economics and finance. I am currently trying to sell mine * so hmu if you’re still looking.

Hey @user24018

A graphical calculator won't be necessary for most BSc Accounting and Finance degrees if that is what you plan to study at university. Most of these degrees have modules based on the ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualifications and other modules are usually business or finance-related. A scientific calculator like the FX-991EX is more than enough. Here's more info on our course for reference. Accounting and Finance BSc (Hons) degree course 2026 entry | University of Surrey

If you're using it for A-Level Maths, it can help you visualise multiple equations on a graph and perform quick calculations, which can be particularly helpful in calculus. I used the Casio CG-50 while I was studying A-Level Maths and Further Maths.

There are helpful tutorials on YouTube that show you how to fully utilise the calculator for A-Level Maths- it's worth having a look.

You can always sell it afterwards if you no longer need it, and there will always be demand from the next cohort.

All the best,
Dan
