Is York boring?

Hi! I'm deciding between going to York and Sheffield uni, and am completely stuck. The biggest reason to go to Sheffield and not York is that I am worried about there not being much to do. Sheffield seems to have so much organised by the uni/student union and always has something to do. York seems less exciting and focused on academia rather than student life, otherwise I would go there. While I'm sure I would always find something to do, the activities Sheffield hosts are so important for settling in and making friends. Thoughts?

Hi!

I studied at York - what sort of things are you into? Are you looking for cafes/restaurants, things to do, nightlife?

Hi!

There is actually a lot to do in York! An easy example is the socials organised by the colleges. In your first year you will live in 1 of 10 colleges and they organise social activities every week for students living in the colleges. These activities vary but there are usually drinking and non drinking events including bar crawls and movie nights and arts and crafts and games.

Aside from that, most students join societies and they also organise socials outside of the society activity itself to meet up and do something fun together. For example Wednesday night all sports societies go clubbing and dress up to different themes each week.

I think definitely student life and academia are split 50/50 across the year. Obviously there are periods of time that academics take precedence over socialising but there are also calmer periods when there is more free time to have fun! The great thing about coming to uni is that your time is your own and you can spend it however you wish!

I hope this helps!
