Hey there,

Its so difficult not to doubt yourself when you're in the process of making a big decision, isn't it? Trust me, you will not be the only one having second thoughts.

I would encourage you firstly to decide firmly on whether you would or would not like to switch. As yourself...

What course do I really want to study?

Which has modules I think I'll find interesting?

What might I want to do after uni? Which will help me get there more?

It may not be possible at this point to switch as it depends on a lot of factors, (most importantly what you want to switch from and what to), however if you decide you defo want to switch, then ring your university immediately and ask about whether this is possible at this stage. If there is room on the course you want to switch too then they may be able to arrange it for you, but every uni's policy on this is different. All you can do is ask - just make sure you're 100% sure this is the right thing for you.

I hope this helps, best of luck with your next steps 🙂

Hi there,

There is a different process for transferring courses at every Uni so it depends what Uni you are at as to whether you are able to switch courses. I am assuming you are in your first year and want to transfer to go into second year on another course? If so, it really depends on your Uni and also what you study now and what you want to swap to as this will have an impact on whether you are able to transfer or not. I think the best idea is to talk to your uni and if you have an academic advisor or personal tutor they may help you with this so you know if it is an option or not!

I would then have a look into the course that you are thinking of changing to and seeing what it will be like and whether you would actually enjoy it more. On the website there should be a list of modules, or you could email and ask for them and you can see whether they are things you like the sound of or not. This may help you make up your mind.

Another thing to consider is the assessment type for both courses - this can really make an impact on some people's decisions so it is worth looking and seeing if the assessment type on the new course is right for you.

You could also try and contact the course leader of the course you want to switch to as they may be able to talk you through some details of the course that may not be on the website and they can just try and help you with your decision! Some may let you come to one of their lectures so you can get a bit more of a feel of what the course if like too if this is something you would want to do.

It's also a good idea to find out if you would be able to go straight into second year, or if you would have to redo first year as this would help you with your decision too. If you have to redo first year, you would need to weigh up whether it is worth it or not, depending on how much you want to switch.

The careers team at Uni may help you too by talking you though some career options for both courses and you can see what is the best for you from here!

I hope some of this helps,

Hey,

It’s completely normal to feel conflicted about your course. Lots of students go through the same thing, especially in the early stages or after starting to learn more about different paths. The good news is it’s usually not too late to change your course, but it really depends on your university’s policies and how far along you are.

At most unis, especially early in the academic year, there’s a window where you can switch courses internally, either within your department or to something else entirely. As long as the new course has space, and you meet the entry requirements. Even later on, you might still be able to change, defer, or transfer, but it’s always best to speak to someone about your options.

I’d definitely recommend reaching out to your personal tutor or programme leader, they’re there to support you and can help talk through your thoughts. At Salford, we have careers services that can help you explore whether your current course aligns with your long-term goals, or if a change might make more sense. Check if your university has similar services to help you.

And if you haven’t already, it can really help to look at open days, course breakdowns, or even taster sessions for other subjects you’re considering. Getting a feel for what you could be doing can make things a lot clearer.

Whatever you decide, you’re not stuck, and you’re definitely not alone in feeling this way.

Good luck 😊
