Uni Degree Help! (STEM)

I study Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry at A-level. I am predicted to achieve all A*s. However, I am not sure what I want to study at university. I have an option of going into the engineering route or the maths route. Possibly corporate? I want a job in the future where I will make a lot of money and have a flexible working-social life. If anyone could suggest some possible degrees and universities, that would help! I do want to stay in London, so preferably a university near me! I have been looking at LSE, Greenwich and Queen Mary so far!

It really depends what you mean by a lot of money, and what career you would find satisfying. If you do not know what you want to do, then don’t rush a decision. Go get some life experience with a gap year, do some volunteering, explore your interests then apply in 12 months.
Id also note, the money you make in your 20s as a graduate is likely not going to be where you make a lot of money, when you’re in an early career perspective you’re typically quite low skill & low expertise, if you make lots of money it’s after you have skills, knowledge & a track record that people can trust you and this built with time. Youre best finding something where you understand the career ladder and happy to put in the time & personal development to get to the high salaries.

Hi there Notsabrina,

Like Mnot has said, there is no rush with this decision as very few new students/graduates know exactly what they want to do in future early on.

Why don't you spend a bit of time this year going to the open days of a few unis you might be interested in studying at? Have a look online at the courses they offer, look through a few you like the sound of and see where it takes you. If you get a few ideas then book a place on the open day and talk to some current students/lecturers, get a feel for the campus and see what subject-specific talks you can go to.

I would not advise pursuing a degree/career based on its earning potential alone. I would advise going for something you are interested in and think you will enjoy - the money will come when you get into work and start earning, and a few years down the line climbing up to higher positions and getting experience. I wouldn't think too far ahead - just focus on finding a course you think you will find engaging for the next 3-5 years. Its always good to think ahead about the types of career you might wat to go into but this should be secondary to maximising your experience in the next few years with a course which you find fulfilling.

At the end of the day this is your decision to make, but your combo of A Levels sounds like it would suit Chemical Engineering quite nicely, as well as Electronic & Electrical Engineering or Maths if you wanted to go for a STEM subject. But, if you wanted something non-STEM that uses a lot of maths then perhaps something like Economics might interest you?

I hope this helps, best of luck with it all!
