Are these university choices ok?

Hi,

I’m on track to be predicted AAA and I wanted to ask if these universities would be a reasonable 5 to apply for.

Oxford History BA - AAA
UCL History BA - AAA
York History BA
Nottingham History BA - AAB
Queen’s University Belfast - ABB

Location isn’t a problem for me. I currently live in London, but I’d be happy to study somewhere new!

Is it risky applying for three AAA universities? Should I pick something slightly lower?

Also, I’d love to hear from anyone studying at these universities!!!

Drop the UCL. Get out of London.
How about picking a relatively easy to get into university? Maybe somewhere like Teeside?
Maybe swap Belfast for Cardiff for lower travel costs at the start and end of each term?

What do you intend doing for a living?
It could be that you'd be better off studying something else. Or not going to university at all and going straight into starting your career. With your predicted grades you appear to be someone with a good amount of self motivation and determination, which are key to you making a success of the non-uni route.

These choices look fine. History is not mega-competitive so, apart from Oxford, if you can write a sensible PS, you will probably still get offers from the AAA choices. Btw, Queens is a fabulous place to study - and Belfast is a great student city, you would have a fantastic time there.

Have you been to any Open Days at these Unis to have a look around and see what makes each course different?

I don't want to swap Queen's as my family is Northern Irish, I'm interested in living in Belfast and have family living there, and I am also interested in studying Irish History, which isn't offered in a lot of UK Universities.

As for UCL, I understand you completely, I kind of want out of London, but, I like there course and I'd like to keep London as an option if I change my mind.

Also, I either want to be a lecturer or secondary school teacher in history, so a degree is kind of required. Plus, I enjoy education, and feel I'd be unhappy and not really suited to the non-uni route. I have motivation because university will get me a career I want. The non-uni route wouldn't, so I'd likely lose that self motivation.

I've just done a residential at Oxford a few days ago! It was history specific so I got to attend lectures, explore multiple colleges, write an essay, and do a tutorial with an Oxford tutor. I really enjoyed myself and it definitely confirmed that university and Oxford was for me! I've also been to UCL for a lecture and tour and liked it as well!

Haven't been to York or Nottingham, but I'll definitely try if I get the chance!

Also haven't been to Queen's, but like I said my family is Northern Irish, and my parents have both told me how beautiful and amazing it is! As much as I'd be disappointment in myself if I got ABB, I'd be happy to study there!

For the 2025 application cycle, only 3 people got offers with predicted AAA (out of 177). This isnt to say you couldnt be one of those people, but i would try my level best to get some A*s in there - 16 were predicted A*AA, 33 A*A*A and 125 had at least 3 A*s)

I'd suggest replacing Notiingham with Exeter AAB - option for study abroad too.

That’s good to know! I just said AAA as most of my teachers said they won’t predict us A*s. Maybe once they know I’m applying to Oxford they’ll move me up. But, history has said they won’t predict me an A*, which is probably the ideal subject to have it in.

It is the college, A Level Subjects, HAT score, interview score and predicted grades of all History offer holders for 2025 entry

One of my history teachers went to Oxford, so I’m sure he’s aware of this. I don’t think he’d have a problem bringing it up, but ofc I’ll have to show that I’m capable!

Also, they aren’t running the HAT this year!

That’s true but, I’m not really a fan of Exeter’s course or the location, so I feel like it would be a waste of a place because I don’t want to go there.

The location is better than Nottingham - near the sea and a far nicer place to live. The course is very flexible ..

With respect, having Oxford and Teesside as possible choices looks more like Russian Roulette than an acceptable insurance.
Leicester and Birmingham are acceptable insurances.

I'd personally drop York. Nice city but the university is like a science park.

York campus is nice with lots of green space and the city (where you'll likely live after year 1) is beautiful.

Hey there,

It's great to hear that you're hopefully considering York! If you like, you can check out our student blogs, where current students share what it's like to study here.

Also, it's only about two hours to get to York from Kings Cross, and it's a direct train. The city itself is seeped in history, as I'm sure you know. It's a great place to come for a day out if you want to get a feel for the place.

If you've got any more questions about anything, the History Admissions ([email protected]) team would be delighted to hear from you.

We hope to see you soon!

Joe
