NHS Bursary Eligible University Suggestions! Help!

Hi all - I'd really love some advice.

I was given a conditional offer for mental health nursing at UWE. I accepted.

I made an application through Student Finance Wales. I was eligible for a maintenance loan, but I was REFUSED the tuition fee loan.

"Because your course is not funded by the NHS bursary team we have to take into account your previous study. This includes any level of higher education you have done in the past. Due to these years of study, even including the suspension year, you do not have enough funding left to be able to receive full funding for every year of your nursing studies.

This specific course at this university is listed as not being eligible for the bursary therefore, no you would not be able to apply for the bursary for this course.

"

I had no idea the course I applied to what not NHS funded. I assumed you could get student finance for all nursing and allied courses even if you already held a degree.

What would you do in my situation? Does anyone know where I can access a list of NHS How do I access a list of MH nursing courses which will accept the NHS bursary?

I am dread going through the interview process again with another university to discover I can't get the tuition fee loan!

Thank you in advance!

In Wales.

Okay. The NHS Wales bursary only applies to courses in Wales so the course at UWE isn't eligible. You should be able to apply through Student Finance Wales for a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan/grant. You will also be able to apply to the NHS Learning Support Fund for the annual training grant (and other benefits) in addition to your maintenance loan.

The following thread sumarises funding options for healthcare students:

However, if this is a second degree note the following:

If you opt-out of the NHS Bursary or study a healthcare course outside of Wales, your application for student finance will be assessed under the previous study rules.

Thank you for your reply. I'm really grateful. I was completely unaware of the previous study rules.

Just for clarification, does this mean my only option to get full Student Finance funding (including tuition fees), is if I choose to study in Wales?

I think you need to call SFW to confirm that - I'm more familiar with SFE's rules and regs.

Did you apply to any unis in Wales?

Sorry for the delayed reply. I didn't apply to any universities in Wales, but if I want to do MH nursing now, I will have to, through clearing! 😬

I discovered a drop-down list of universities and courses funded by NHS Wales bursary while starting an application on NHS Students Wales website. Bristol UWE (as well as other universities in England and Scotland) are on the list, but only for medicine.

Thought this was useful information for anyone else in my situation.

SFW couldn't give me a list and told me to resort to Google, which wasn't very helpful!
