has been asked in 2018, 2019 and 2021 but most recently in 2022 - "Critically compare the views of Aquinas and Freud on the conscience and its role in moral decision making."

thank you!

i think for conscience, it's usually always a comparison between Freud and Aquinas, but they might phrase it differently, for example something like - "is conscience linked to or sperate from reason and the unconscious mind?"

seconding this! in the past they've asked about aquinas and freud singularly (but of course you must bring in opposing views to develop your argument), and in 2021 it was 'There is no evidence to support the claim that conscience exists' which leans toward Freud

haha, that's philosophy for you 🙃 it was set as independent study over the holidays for my class so oppositely i may just have never studied it in full detail

This teacher did it throughout my GCSEs as well though to the point where we were rushing to finish (at both GCSEs and A-levels!)

yes honestly I'm feeling the same. Do we think that Conscience will definitely come up this year, because it hasn't been on the exam since 2022??

its so weird, cos different textbooks make it sound like different things. am I right in saying freud conscience = process of making us feel an emotion (super ego internalises laws of childhood and conscience is the process of reconciling those laws with the decisions made in the ego?). and then aquinas view of conscience is that it is part of our reasoning process (god given) where we make a decision? I feel like im a bit vague on aquinas id love if somebody could help!

I think that is right yeah. I have one essay plan comparing Aquinas and Freud and I bring in Erich Fromm who develops Freud's ideas. He talks about the authoritarian and humanistic conscience which I think makes a lot more sense than both Aquinas and Freud's ideas!

How do you think they will word it/what the focus will be? Based on past questions, I can't see a new angle.
