Advice on journey to Vet med UK

Hi, I just wanted to ask, I am in year 13, I have always wanted to do vet med, but I did not take chemistry initially. My A levels are around the corner and I hope to achieve my predicted grades of AAA. I got 4 offers, to study Animal science at nottingham , Bioveterinary science at Liverpool and surrey, and Veterinary nursing at Bristol. None of these courses are what I really want to study, however at the time of applying to vet med which was early entry (last september/october) My predictions were ABB so no chance of getting accepted to vet med and my teachers wouldnt budge. I am considering a gap year if all goes to plan and I get AAA. I went to Nottingham’s open day for vet med, and the Prelim seems perfect for me as I chose wrong subejcts ( I do biology psychology and economics) but have al the relevant work experience and have completed the online work experience form. The University of Liverpool also require AAA and see Psych as a 2nd science but I realise I will be up against A* students who also do chem. What do you think is a better idea- I have a couple of options: wait till results day, take a gap year and reapply to vet med at notts and liverpool / continue at one of my 4 places and do postgrad, accelerated vet med (expensive and not guaranteed entry to vet med) or try and do chemistry like the user above, in 1 year/ at least do AS? Honestly i dont want to give up on the dream of studying vet med, even if it means considering european institutions. I have 200 hours of work experience so far, across equine, small animal, exotics, lambing, and placements and would definitley up this in a gap year. Thanks!

There are other options as well as Notts prelim. Have a look at Harper & Keele's gateway to vet med too - you do a year biology at Keele, have to be in the top 70% to move onto vet med, or at Harper you do I think biomed/biovet? I can't remember. I would personally either chose a prelim year, or sit A level Chem in one year, over doing a degree you don't want to do for 3 years, then being in debt before your vet med degree even starts. Plus it'll take you an extra 2 years as opposed to an extra 1. It's all about what works best for you of course. Definitely look into Harper&Keele as well as Notts and Liverpool. Some unis like Liverpool, don't seem to take on loads of reapplicants / people who aren't coming straight from A levels. Whereas Harper& Keele (I am a 2nd year there now), about half of us either resat A levels, have a degree already, a few did the prelim year etc etc, we have many mature students.

Thank you so much. I actually reached out to Harper and Keele, they got back to me very quickly and I would be eligible for their veterinary bioscience pathway!! It’s one year, which I would have to work hard in to gain a place for vet med. Are you at H&K, what do you think of their vet school ? And i agree with the debt thing. In my family’s case they would be able to support the two degrees but I just think it’s not neccesary when vet med after the 3 year degree isn’t even guaranteed. I will defo try for nottingham prelim, liverpool, H&K vet bioscience degree, and I am waiting on UCLAN to reply to see if i am eligible to study there. I have a friend doing pathway 2 at harper keele, so I will find out more about it x

I am at HK, I really like it!! It’s great having Keele’s science facilities and Harper’s farm, and the on site big vet practice too!
One of my friends did the gateway, she said it was tough, but worth it!
