That’s such a great way to spend your gap year. There are definitely a few essay and scholarship competitions out there for science/biology students, though they can be a bit niche.
A few places to check out:
-Newnham College (Cambridge) Essay Competitions some are STEM-related and open to students on a gap year.
-Nuffield Research Placements not an essay comp, but great for getting hands-on science experience (depending on eligibility).
-The Royal Society of Biology sometimes runs competitions for school leavers or early undergrads—worth checking their site.
-The Biochemical Society also posts opportunities for students interested in biosciences.
-STEM-related essay comps by the Royal Society, Gresham College, or UK universities pop up now and then—set up Google Alerts or check TSR’s Academic Competitions section to catch them early.

If you’re also looking to build your personal statement or CV, writing for science blogs, volunteering in healthcare/lab settings, or doing MOOCs can be useful too.
