how is Durham University for international students ??!

Hey everyone,
I’m an international student and just got an offer to study Law at Durham. I know it’s super prestigious and all (everyone keeps saying it's amazing for Law), but I’m still kinda heartbroken over getting rejected from King’s.

I’m feeling a bit unsure about Durham. I’ve heard it’s quite posh, private school-heavy, and can be hard to fit in if you're not from a certain background.

I’m a pretty outgoing person and really value having a good social life and finding my people, so I'm just wondering what’s it actually like socially at Durham if you're not from the UK, especially as an international student? Do you end up feeling left out? Is it hard to make friends or feel like part of the community?

I also have an offer from Bristol (which I’ve heard is more lively, kind of a mini-London), but I know Durham has a stronger rep for Law. Just don't wanna end up somewhere that feels isolating.

Would love to hear from anyone who's been or is going to Durham especially fellow international students. Honest opinions please 🙏

The posh/ PS stereotypes commonly attached to Durham are usually consistent across most of the top RGs for a subject such as law( Bristol too)- this is inevitable.

At both however, there are plenty of resources/ opportunities to connect with other international students, and find people from different communities/ countries etc.

Choose where you feel you will develop the most- course modules/ campus/ city etc… not to avoid a portion of students that will be at any of these choices regardless.

Worth noting Durham is fairly small though, so social life there exclusively is fairly limited, however it is a tiny train journey from Newcastle, where lots of students go out for a big city feel at night etc… so that’s not an issue.

Congratulations to your offers.

Bristol and Durhsm are both very good unis. There is absolutely no point comparing their prestige and rankings. Pick the uni you like more.

Durham is a bit "isolated" location-wise. It is a small city with student making up a significant percentage of its population. It's a matter of personal preference, someone like it and some find it monotonic.

All UK unis are highly diversified, so do Bristol and Durham. Overseas students will have no problem mixing it. But you can't just sit there and wait, you have to reach out friendly.
