University of Bath for Psychology?

Hi all,

I've received an offer from Bath to study psychology, but compared to my other options (York, Exeter, Sussex, and Leeds) the modules posted on the website are much more limited and honestly seem a lot more boring than anywhere else. I'm aware that Bath tends to rank highly on league table positions for Psychology, but I'm really unsure about the modules. I feel lucky that I have received an offer, but I feel I'm very unlikely to accept it due to how limiting and uninteresting the modules seem. For instance, York and Exeter have a greater variety of modules across the 3/4 years e.g. cognitive psychology/ neuroscience, development and language, social psychology and individual differences, but Bath doesn't seem to have such a large variety.

Are the modules published on the website inaccurate, or lacking information? Or, are they really that bad?
Hi there Mary,

I must say the information on the website is a little vague - this is because something called 'curriculum transformation' is happening whereby we are reviewing the specifics of the modules based on what is relevant and who will be teaching you. They vary subtly each year, which is why we can't be too specific.

I did my undergrad in psychology at Bath, and absolutely loved it. Some of my modules across the years were:

Mind, Brain and Behaviour

Cognitive Neuropsychology

Clinical Psychology

Health Psychology

Behavioural Economics

Affective Neuroscience (the brain science of emotions)

Forensic Psychology

Sports Psychology

Organisational Psychology

Child/Developmental Psychology

Educational Psychology (my personal favourite!)

Psychology of Language Development

Psychology of Autism

Plus your standard Quant and Qual research methods and design, statistics which are taught at most unis. No guarantees that those exact ones will be available in your year should you choose us, but I found the variety of modules you can do, and within those the variety of topics you can focus on super-broad and meant I never got bored.

The website I would say is deliberately vague because of the transformation operation, but rest assured you will get a huge variety of optional and compulsory modules - of course you won't find them all interesting but hopefully there will be plenty that would chime to your interests and goals. I would also say that across the board, the lecturers are fantastic and the quality of teaching is excellent.

I hope that helps - let me know if you have any questions 🙂

Thank you so much for your response, it was insightful. I will be attending an offer holder open day soon anyway, so I will ask about the modules there as well

Go where you will feel happiest - and if the course at Bath doesnt interest you then that is a very good reason for going somewhere else. Rankings dont actually make you happy.

If the courses confer GBC with the BPS then there are certain core modules every university must cover. So there’s not complete flexibility to choose which modules you want and the courses have more overlap in modules than you may initially realise. I think I had maybe 4 or 6 elective modules total.

Hi,

First of all, huge congratulations on your offer from Bath! That’s a fantastic achievement, and it’s clear you’ve worked incredibly hard. 😊

I completely understand your concerns about module variety—it's so important to feel excited and engaged with what you’ll be studying for the next few years. I can only really speak for York, but we offer a great range of modules, which are all linked on our website if you'd like to read more. And the huge variety of option modules in the 3rd or 4th year.

As for Bath, it might be worth reaching out to their department to double-check if the modules listed are the full selection. But trust your gut! If you’re finding York and Exeter more aligned with your interests, that’s definitely worth considering.

If you want to chat more about the modules at York or what it's like to study here, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to help!

Or you could email the department: [email protected]

Good luck with your decision—I’m sure you’ll make the right one for you!
