Can we get away with making up scholar quotes in a bad situation. Like i might have to use a real scholar, but make up somehthing they didn't say to suit my argument. surely that would be nearly impossible for an examiner to go thorugh their complete works to find out/ complete waste of time for them?

I mean I'm a fellow student and I would say no, but imo if you know their general opinions and are strong enough to analyse them you *can* kind of make what a scholar says suit your essay, if that makes sense? so for instance if I know (completely made up name and made up prompts for disclaimer lol) Bob thinks that Hector is a really tragic character in the Iliad, I can use that to argue that the Iliad shows the negatives of war through the tragedy of main characters like Hector. or if Bob thinks that Dido is a really likeable person in the Aeneid, I can use it to argue that Aeneas would be 'unlikeable' for how he treats her. Examiners do know the general opinions of scholars (like Hall often talks about women and often argues for women being tragic or overlooked), so if you suddenly started saying something that a scholar doesn't typically focus on or, god forbid, goes entirely against their main points or argument, you've kind of dug yourself a hole for AO2. TLDR; I wouldn't fabricate OR use an existing scholar's name for a fabricated argument. Analyse and reframe existing arguments that you've revised. There's bound to be a scholar for every single argument out there -- even if you disagree with the scholar's point, you can still talk about them then provide good, solid evidence and analysis for why you don't agree. so to use one of the earlier examples, 'Bob thinks that Dido is really likeable, but I completely disagree because of how she treats Aeneas in Book 4' and providing solid evidence and analysis of that. i hope that was helpful even a little bit and pls feel free to correct me -- good luck!!!!

I did similar but mentioned the formulae Homer uses being peaceful and the ‘evil’ is instead the characters (like Achilles to hector) not death itself

It was something like ‘Athena is more important to Odysseus than to Penelope’

Yeah me too! It just threw me off at first cuz it’s quite a big topic and I thought the equation wasn’t narrow enough
