help me choose my ib subjects!!

firstly, i know i want to study psychology in university.
the universities i’ve been looking at require around 36 points with a 666 HL.

my current ib subjects that i know i will take in 2025 is:
HL: psychology, biology
SL: maths, chinese

i’m working at 8s in psych and bio, a 7 in maths and a 9 in chinese

the possibilities for the remaining two subjects:
english lit and language (this is a requirement, but i’m not sure whether to do HL or SL) (grades 88)
business (grade 8)
physics (grade 7, but not confident or enjoying…)
politics (never done, only available at IB)

please help me choose!!!!
Dont do physics, you dont enjoy it and it gets much harder past gcse. Do some research into what is covered on politics to choose between politics and business. It’s entirely up to you if you want to do SL or HL English.

I would do SL English because like only 5% of people get 7s for HL English. Psyshoclogy and biology are very content heavy so maybe business might be a good HL (I’ve heard it’s pretty easy). I do Global Politics and it’s also very content heavy so I wouldn’t recommend it as you already are planning to do two difficult subjects. Do absolutely not do physics. If you are only getting a 7 you will not survive IB physics SL or HL. Geography is also considered an easy subject if you have done it before?

What are your available choices for the 3rd HL subject?

I'd prefer business, English or politics although right now I am leaning to business

For Psychology you will need at least one science HL - its a science subject at degree level, not a social science. Check the entry requirements for the sort of Uni / course you want to go to. However, if you meet this, then your 3rd HL subject can be literally anything. It makes sense to pick a subject that you will enjoy studying, and where you feel confident of a high grade. Don't worry about what you thin is 'relevant' to Psych or what you think 'looks good'.

Hey! You’re doing amazing already super strong grades! 👏
For English, I’d go SL unless you love essays HL gets intense, especially with Psych and Bio at HL. For the last subject, business sounds like your best bet: you’re doing well in it and it links nicely with psych. I’d avoid physics if you’re not into it. it only gets harder and politics is a bit of a risk since it’s new to you.
You’ve got great options, just aim for balance. You’ll do great! 😊

you should take physics if you’re aiming for a competitive uni as they normally require multiple sciences since psych is science based! but don’t do something you hate tbh

They dont ask for 'multiple sciences' at all - even at 'competitive Unis' it will be one science and/or one 'quant or science related subject', and that last bit can include subjects like Geog and Econ, some will even just accept HL or A level Psychology. :Check the entry requirements......

this is based on foi requests! i’m going based on them for top ten unis (camb, oxford, ucl etc), as their courses are very scientifically aligned. others you should be fine with less

You don't need an FOI request.
You just look on the Uni's website course pages at the stated Entry Requirements.

Go for HL English if you're handling 88s already, unis usually like strong English for psych, and you're doing well in it.

foi requests tell you who is accepted into the course realistically since courses are competitive.. entrt reqs say that ucl and oxford both require multiple sciences! but again, for slightly less competitive places u should be fine with less!

But it doesn't tell you that taking more sciences than required was the reason they were accepted.

i know nothing about ib but going by gut instinct alone i think you should take standard level english unless your course requires higher or smth. english is not an easy ride in the slightest

i don’t think you can get much clearer than ‘science subjects strongly preferred’ and also the data shows a really strong correlation for certain universities. for example, at the cambridge offer holders day this year they said that they feel science a levels help prepare us for the course content better than others. but it depends on what course you apply to: if op wants to apply to a more socially oriented course, then they’d probably have a higher chance of acceptance!

I dont think physics will help you be a better psychology student, other than teaching you about the scientific method and stuff (which youll learn in bio and psych). In contrast, a subject like politics, English language or business could very well develop an interest in psychology. Think about the content the OP could learn on topics like language development, how psych can link to marketing used in business and links to politics. The OP will have science subjects (bio and psych) no matter what other HL subject they pick and it will be far more valuable for them to speak with passion about how their subjects link to their interest in psych when writing their ps and in interview. Thats just what i think, feel free to disagree with me as im not an expert.
