Accomodation after foundation year

Hello everyone!
I’m planning on going onto a foundation year and was wondering how accom looks after first year? Do you get to stay in your hall or do you have to move out? Any information would be greatly appreciated thank you!

Hi @hyejuu ,

This will be different for each Uni and I can see that you are going to Reading, but I still thought I could answer just for some general advice.

So, what would usually happen is that you will get accommodation in your foundation year as if you were a first year so you will get priority in this year for accommodation. Then in your first year if your Uni has room in their halls you should get accommodation too, but this might not be guaranteed at all Universities. At Hallam, they generally tend to try and get all first years who have done a foundation year a room in halls so it is likely that this will be the case at your uni too, although if you want to find out for definite, the best place to email is the Reading accommodation team: [email protected] as they will have the best answer!

Just in general, you may be able to request a room in your foundation year to be with other foundation year students and this way you will all be in the same boat and if you make friends with them, you may want to get a house with them again next year.

Or, even if you are in a flat with first years, you are no different to them and you may still want to just stay with them and get a house together. You will find that people will be different ages at Uni anyway as some start later, some do foundation years or placements and some have to redo years so you won't just be the only one who will be doing four years.

You may also meet people on your course who you want to live with in your first year!

Or, if you just want to stay in halls again and be with people who will be in first year at the same time as you, you can apply for this and hopefully you will get it! As I said, the accommodation team will be able to tell you if you would be likely to get a room or not and this may help you make up your mind.

One thing I would say though is to not worry about getting a house with people and then you having an extra year without them. It will work itself out in the end and you will find people so if you want to move into a house with people don't let this stop you.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi @hyejuu,

All universities have their own accommodation policies, so it's best to check directly with Reading - their website should have the most up-to-date information, and if needed, there should also be contact details in case you'd like to email and ask.

From my experience as an recent graduate, foundation year students usually follow the same accommodation path as other undergraduates. Most first-year students, including those on a foundation year, typically start off in university-managed halls, and places are usually guaranteed for that first year.

Since the foundation year is considered your first year of study, you'd likely be housed with other first-year undergraduates. After that, many students either apply to stay in university accommodation again (though it may not be the same room or flat), or choose to move into private housing - often with friends they've met during their first year.

So in short: yes, you'd be treated like a first-year when it comes to halls, and after that you'd follow the usual route of either applying again for halls or looking into private options for second year.

Hope this helps and good luck in your future studies 😊

Best wishes,
^Hannah

Hi there @hyejuu, as the others have mention this depends on the university. You should still likely be able to stay within student halls of residence but it may not be the same building or room. Once you have confirmed that you are proceeding to the first year at uni, I think it is best to contact the accommodations team at the university to check and see what types of accommodation are available 🤗 Alternatively, you may want to consider renting privately with your friends after foundation as it might be more affordable than some private student accommodations depending on the area 😄 I hope this helps.

Hi there,
this really depends on your university - many in London allow places in halls for all years of study, similar to some campus universities. But others don't guarantee places after first year and encourage you to find private/alternate student accommodation of house shares with fellow students.

Your university should be ablet to provide some guidance on this through their website or asking them about it directly.

Hope this helps
