should i pursue vet med and are there any volunteering/WEX opportunities?

i am in y12 and i take bio chem geo and psych. i am considering vet med as a career to follow, as i love animals and have an interest in medicine. i am also considering medicine and pharmacy, but i do not think i can get high enough grades. i am uncertain about the application process to unis. are there any extracurricular/supercurricular activities about vetmed and does anyone have any advice?

:wavey: I considered vet med for a while and to explore the subject i did some virtual work experience with vets for pets via Springpod. I really enjoyed some of the content on animals but decided that it isnt the field for me. Id recommend taking a look at the course to see if it appeals to you as it gives a thorough overview of the field, daily working within a vet clinic and how you can get into the career.
With regards the application process and what is needed, I recommend looking at some subject guides on sites like uniguide, whatuni and the comepleteuniversityguide to see what unis want and what the subject has to offer. Let me know if you have any questions 🙂 Have a great day!

Hi!
I'm heading to Edinburgh for vet med this September so hopefully I can help a little!

I would definitely recommend getting some experience volunteering at both clinics and animal shelters in your local area as you need a fair amount of experience to do well at interviews. Some schools have requirements for the type and amount of experience (like RVC requires 70 hours of clinical experience and 70 hours of other animal experience in the past 18 months) while other schools just ask for a range of experience of your choice, so it would probably be good to do some research into which schools you would consider applying for and target your work experience towards that.

You mentioned that you don't think you can get the grades for medicine and pharmacy, but I would point out that the grades for vet med aren't much lower than those for medicine (the standard offer is AAA unless you qualify for contextual offers).

Maybe a good goal would be to reach out to shelters, riding yards, clinics etc this spring and then try to book 3-4 weeks over the summer? The best thing to do is call or visit in person, and don't be discouraged if you get a lot of no's! (There is also a free, online work experience course offered jointly by Nottingham, Cambridge, and Edinburgh that is really helpful.) Then you can do another 2 weeks at your favorite placements at the beginning of the school year, and you'll have a solid amount to apply with by the October deadline. You're definitely not too late to get started now as long as you take initiative
