exam stress

i need some advice

i have found this easter half term extremely hard.

i have tried to make a study plan which covered all the content which i needed to cover but there hasn’t been a single day where i have actually completed all my tasks. i have tried reducing my task list but then i just wouldn’t cover everything i need too before the end of half term

i feel unmotivated now and that i am a lost cause atp. like i sit down to revise but the issue is i don’t know how too so i just get so so overwhelmed and then just end up getting upset.

i don’t know how to deal with this issue because gcses are so close and i am so so scared for them.

i don’t know how to revise for each of my subjects and i think that is what also causes me so much stress because it takes me so long to cover literally one topic of physics

sorry for the rant but any help would be majorly appreciated

Take a deep breath and list everything you need to do - content wise. Purchase notes or watch summary videos and move straight onto exam practise. If it makes you feel better I was bereaving a close family member and felt completely unmotivated - I still had heaps of content to learn because I never paid attention in class .

2 weeks before my gcses I watched videos, made notes and reviewed answering techniques and hoped for the best for all my subjects. For maths I did past paper questions like for each topic all of them grade 1-9 as it was my weakest subject. I got a 7 in the end - up from a 3 the entire year. For science I watched a video the night before which summarised all the content in under 2 hours for each - physics chemistry and biology. And from a 5:5 I got a 7:7 . And all my humanity subjects which I taught myself 2 weeks prior to exams (history , RS, English lit/lang ) I got 8s/9s

It’s worth noting I was starting from scratch. I was naturally stronger in humanities so that definitely helped and videos were my learning style. Work out what your learning style is eg, textbooks and notes? Flash cards? Video summaries and practise? And work your way through your subjects. Do any subjects you enjoy or are confident in last and prioritise the difficult ones .

Good luck and honestly no need to stress you’ve got this!!! You can do it there’s more than enough time.

Use Seneca if available for your courses, it covers pretty much all the content comprehensively in one place. This will reduce the pressure on you to organise your revision and keep track of everything yourself. Then once you know what you’re struggling with topic wise you can study the content for those topics using blurting, exam questions, videos etc. Let me know if you want any recommendations for resources or anything for any of your subjects 🙂 Have a great rest of your half term!

Oh my god my favourites - well only Macbeth and dr Jekyll and hyde I can assist with .

With these texts there’s only a set amount of themes they can ever test you on and are usually variations of the same questions. List all the themes and list 20 short quote that you can easily memorise and apply to any question/theme

For example
Look like the innocent flower/ but be the serpent under't'

This applies to the following themes
Deception
Appearance vs reality

Women

Ambition
Kingship

Religion

and have short analysis but as long as your familiar with the text you can do that during the test. also you want to ensure you understand that Macbeth isn’t important as a character but as an IDEA. Do not write answers which view macbeth as a standalone character but rather an expression of a theme

eg, he contrasts the righteous king (Duncan) because Macbeth commits regicide and gives the king an undeserved death.

But why does Shakespeare do this?
to explore the idea of moral corruption in relation to kingship and its effect on the state.
As we know the horses eat each other and nature is in disharmony? (I haven’t done it in 3 years now sorry)

also context don’t bolt it on - embed where applicable where it ADDS to your answer

Also have a “niche idea” in your content bank it will give your answer the edge and will get you easy marks for something you have memorised that others haven’t explored .

During my exams we had the porter scene to analyse. The night before my friends asked what I predict would come up ( English was my specialty lol) and I told them the porter scene and they assumed I was messing around and joking. When it came up I had an unbelievable amount to write and so many well developed niche ideas.
Ie usually thought of as just comedic relief but actually the porter was an equivocator ,and it was in his humor he spoke the truth. The whole scene was dramatic irony etc .

For reference I lost a total of 10 marks in English lit - I expected much more because for anthropology I solely learnt half of ozymandias and put those lines in a Lana del Rey song to remember it and absolutely rinsed those lines when comparing to my last duchess. This meant I probably got full marks in most my questions because I know my poetry was going to be weaker.
dr Jekyll and hyde I will provide tomorrow as it’s getting late now but I hope that’s cleared it up and helped you out x

Themes you will have to look online for - ChatGPT if need be. But this sounds abit odd for a year 11 but I was actually watching lectures and reading dissertations and making my own content because I have a lot of passion for english . Depending on whether you do - read dissertations eg type in Macbeth and madness dissertation pdf . Or Macbeth and kingship pdf . Lectures are on YouTube. And make notes it’s really interesting. But if you don’t online ready made resources are more than enough for you content wise and just summarise into notes and keep practising analysing x

Hello there!

You are not alone! So many people feel exactly like exam time.
I am sure you care a lot, which is already a huge strength, even if it feels overwhelming right now.
Sometimes the pressure to do everything can actually freeze people, which makes it harder to start.
Instead of aiming to cover everything perfectly, try breaking things into much smaller, specific goals such as revising a small part of a book, or just make 5 flashcards. This way you still make progress without feeling like you are drowning.

It’s totally okay if you don't finish huge lists every day, consistent small steps still build up.
Also, every subject doesn’t need a perfect method. You might just be overwhelmed, and that is normal.
You still have time, and you don’t have to be perfect to succeed.

You've got this, one small step at a time!

I hope this helps!

Kind regards,
Reka - Coventry University Student Ambassador
