St Andrews MSc Data Science (online) masters offer

Hello, anyone in this program kind enough to share your experience so far? I have been looking everywhere - this forum, reddit, even LinkedIn, but can't find any resources so far.

I would like to know
- How's the online experience? (e.g. Quality of video lecture content, learning material)
- Committed time of tutor support (e.g. responsiveness when you have questions)
- How many students in your cohort?
- any other points you could share

I received my offer from St Andrews (online) and Birkbeck (on campus) so far. An online structure does give me the flexibility to balance full-time work and part-time study, but I struggle to conclude whether this program is worth the £18,000 price tag

Much appreciated!

Hi,

I'm a current MSc Data Science online student at the University of St Andrews, and here is my feedback based on your question list.

So far so good. I've experienced 4 of 8 modules to complete thus far. Actually video lectures are better than I expected. Also the depth of some modules are satisfying. There are some modules that are focused on practical side, rather than the theoretical side, and in this case you might find them not dealing with the theoretical side enough, but you know that is what the module is meant to be.

Most of the questions I posted on the forums were replied within a couple of days, unless the tutors are in their annual leaves, such as summer holidays. Also, if you want, you could book a 1-1 session using MS Teams, and I've used it a lot.

This is tricky to know, since there is no such a thing as 'let's gather altogether at this time and have an introductory time' or their official announcement about it. When you're registered, you just start learning through the online platform and that's it. The only way I could guess it is to see how many unique people have posted on the forum of one of the most introductory and easiest module, Programming in Python, in the similar period I posted there. I guess roughly about 5 ~ 10 people are in my cohort, starting from March 2025.

I got an offer from Bath before and chose this one. So far, as I mentioned, there is no regret and one thing to mention is that I think the choice is totally up to you considering what aim you've got for the future after the graduation. If the curriculum of St Andrews' seems quite fit, then I could recommend this module for you.

Thank you so much for your detailed response. I just started the programme yesterday. I have submitted my modules and waiting for the advisor to respond. I have chosen the four modules below for my first year. Ideally I hope to finish the masters within 2 years but will also take into consideration the actual workload studying alongside my full time job. What about you? Do you have a timeline in mind?

Programming in Python
Machine Learning Algorithms
Numeric Optimisation
Data-Driven Systems
