SFE 'gift year' and potentially re-doing 3rd year all over again.

Good morning fellow TSR members,

Due to some extenuating circumstances related to my household (and my own well-being) I have found myself in the precarious prospect of graduating with a 3rd class degree, 2:2 at best if I do well in the last stretch of exams (this is due to MC's which prevented me from performing to the best of my abilities in 4 previous assignments, and subsequently failing to submit them, thus resulting in me trying to retrieve them but I am still in the process of explaining my situation to the university. The university has a deferral window in July).

In essence, I would like to wholeheartedly showcase my true ability on this degree, as I believe that had I not have those EC's I would've been in the position of completing, and therefore submitting those pieces of work. For reference, despite challenging times since the beginning of my degree I've been averaging a 2:1, and the occasional 1sts in modules. Unfortunately, I have reached a severe breaking point.

In the most unfortunate outcome (God forbid), how likely would I be in re-doing 3rd year in order to complete my degree?

Best wishes, and I would really appreciate some insight into this!! I am panicking so bad, but I try to remain strong and focus on these last exams!

Most university regulations don’t allow repeating third year.
You need to talk to someone who understands your university regulations first.

Thank you for getting in touch,

This is concerning! What about re-doing certain modules in the following academic year, whether as an 'in attendance' or 'external' student?

It’s rare - you need to speak to someone at your university who understands the regulations for your degree.
Usually the school/department office or registry/student records team will be best to explain your options

Hi there,

We (SFE) can't advise on this. You'd need to speak to your university regarding this and they'd be able to advise if they are allowing you to redo the 3rd year. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

Thank you for getting in touch! Just for my own understanding, the SFE 'gift' year can be used to fund a repeat year? What would the ramifications of this be, re formalities around the application process?

Yes - if you haven't used your 'additional year' you can apply for this to claim the funding. But do check first with the university to confirm if you are able to do the year again. Thanks, Jason
