Bath vs York for psychology

I’ve got offers from Bath and York to study psychology with placement and for an integrated masters course respectively. They’re both asking for the same grades and I’m not sure which to pick! Can anyone help.

Congratulations.

Both are very good unis, their undergraduate programmes are recognised:

Maybe you could look into their elective modules to see which you like more.

Hi there,

Thankyou for reaching out and congrats on your offers for those two fab unis!

It really all comes down to which course you feel you would find the most interesting and enjoyable - have a look at the detailed module breakdowns if you can. When I did psychology at Bath a few years back I really enjoyed the variety of the modules you get to study in your 4 years (I too did a placement) - health psychology, clinical, forensic, sports psychology, behavioural economics, psychology os autism, cognitive neuropsychology, affective neuroscience, biopsychology, educational, developmental/child psychology, language development - whilst the modules at Bath may not be the exact same as this they will likely be on similar themes.

Then its about asking yourself which uni you felt the most at home at. What was the campus vibe like at each? Where can you visualise yourself as being happiest?

Overall I would definitely recommend going for a course with a placement if you can, as this provides not only the chance to do something fun and different for a year, but invaluable experience for your CV which other grads are not likely to have. I'd recommend a placement over an integrated masters because you can always choose to do a masters after your undergrad either at the same uni or a different one. If you wanted to go on to do the doctorate in Clin Psych then having the placement will also be a good chance to build up your clinical experience - but even if you don't want to do this, employers in whichever industry you choose will look highly upon a placement year 🙂

Have you tried speaking to your loved ones and seeing what they think? How about writing a Bath VS York pros and cons list to see which emerges as a clearer winner?

I hope some of this helped, let us know if you have any more questions!

Bath is as expensive as living in London, and its a very white middle-class Uni.
York is cheaper and more socially diverse.

York is expensive too so don't use that as a decider!
Have you visited both? My daughter was all set to apply to Bath for Psychology as on paper she really liked it. She did not like it at all on the Open Day and is hoping to go to York.
Others love Bath so gut feel is important.

Hi!

Congrats on your offers! Both are great unis so I'm sure you will have a fantastic experience wherever you go! There are so many factors that come into play when making your choice, so take the time to go through everything and weigh up the pros and cons.

The course is important - have a look at the modules and what interests you most. When I was choosing a firm, I also looked at the staff at each uni and what they specialised in, as this will then filter down into the teaching you receive. I felt really inspired by some of the staff in my department at York and could imagine myself wanting to learn from them as they were at the forefront of the field I was interested in.

Have you visited both unis? Open Days can really help you know if you feel at home somewhere.

If you have any questions about York - accommodation, student life, the course and so on, just get in touch and I can try to help!

Hazel 🙂

Omg I was literally in the same predicament. Where did you decide to firm? (If you have made your decision). I personally chose York because I preferred the course over Bath's, and the prices for student accommodation (particularly for studios) in Bath is extortionate so that definitely swayed my decision...
