How important are undergraduate courses when applying for a postgrad course at Oxford

Hello,

I am wondering how big of an impact your undergrad course makes for applying to a postgrad course at oxford. I have an offer to study straight computer science, and an offer for philosophy and computer science, but on the postgrad for oxford I can see that they are looking for mathematics and computer science degrees, so I am wondering whether it would be better to study pure computer science?

Thank you

Hi there! 👋
Oxford typically prefers applicants whose undergraduate degrees closely align with the postgraduate course. If the program lists Mathematics and computer science as ideal backgrounds, then a pure Computer Science degree especially one with strong math content may offer a clearer fit.
Philosophy and computer science can still be competitive if it includes relevant technical modules. It really depends on your interests and how well the course prepares you for the next step. If in doubt, reaching out to Oxford’s admissions team for clarification is always a good idea.

Best of luck! 🌟
