Advice Needed – Student Finance Hardship Appeal & Personal Circumstances

I’m reaching out because I’m in a really difficult situation and would appreciate any advice or support from anyone who’s been through something similar or understands how Student Finance England works when it comes to hardship appeals.

I was recently denied hardship support during my suspension period, even though my circumstances are quite serious. I’ve been dealing with multiple challenges that have made it impossible for me to work or support myself:
I’m currently under ambulatory hospital care due to dyspnea and other health complications.
I’m still recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and a recent motorcycle accident.
I was also a victim of a robbery, which has taken a toll on my mental health.
On top of this, I help care for my retired parents, and I don’t have any form of income right now.
I’m over £10,000 in debt, and I was relying on the maintenance loan to help with repayments I’d even made arrangements with creditors based on receiving it.

The reason I went back into education was because my injuries meant I couldn’t return to physically demanding work, and I saw studying as a better long-term option. I’ve submitted an appeal with medical evidence, but I’m really worried they still won’t approve it, despite my situation clearly fitting their criteria of “extreme and unforeseen circumstances.”

If anyone has advice on how best to approach this, what additional info to include, or how to make sure my appeal is seriously considered, I would be really grateful. I’m determined to recover and continue my education, but I’m honestly just trying to stay afloat right now.

Hi Stephen

I emailed [email protected] on 12/04/2025 after receiving a message from one of their team regarding my hardship application. I also followed up with a formal appeal to [email protected] on 15/04/2025.

I’m honestly praying for a positive outcome. I’ve been advised by others including professionals that my circumstances are considered extreme, and I’ve done everything I can to explain my situation and provide evidence.

Right now, I genuinely need help and support to get through this difficult period. I’ve put my case forward as clearly and truthfully as possible, and I hope it’s handled with care and understanding.

Hi again, a present the Financial Hardship team are currently taking an estimated 7 working days for review of evidences submitted, so we are currently still within that review period. Hopefully it will not be too long for the response back. This will normally be issued to your email address registered on your account with us. The appeals process is a little different, they are currently taking an estimated 20 working days for a full response, so that will take a little longer, but again they will respond once the appeal has been fully reviewed by an appeals assessor. At present, it it about time for the reviews from both departments. Stephen.
