I’m reaching out because I’m in a really difficult situation and would appreciate any advice or support from anyone who’s been through something similar or understands how Student Finance England works when it comes to hardship appeals.
I was recently denied hardship support during my suspension period, even though my circumstances are quite serious. I’ve been dealing with multiple challenges that have made it impossible for me to work or support myself:
• I’m currently under ambulatory hospital care due to dyspnea and other health complications.
• I’m still recovering from a torn Achilles tendon and a recent motorcycle accident.
• I was also a victim of a robbery, which has taken a toll on my mental health.
• On top of this, I help care for my retired parents, and I don’t have any form of income right now.
• I’m over £10,000 in debt, and I was relying on the maintenance loan to help with repayments — I’d even made arrangements with creditors based on receiving it.
The reason I went back into education was because my injuries meant I couldn’t return to physically demanding work, and I saw studying as a better long-term option. I’ve submitted an appeal with medical evidence, but I’m really worried they still won’t approve it, despite my situation clearly fitting their criteria of “extreme and unforeseen circumstances.”
If anyone has advice on how best to approach this, what additional info to include, or how to make sure my appeal is seriously considered, I would be really grateful. I’m determined to recover and continue my education, but I’m honestly just trying to stay afloat right now.
